The time leading up to winter break feels like it will never come, but then that month at home goes by so fast.

It feels like we blink and it’s back to classes. We’re studying for exams again and dreaming about spring break.

From the first to the last day of winter break, take advantage of every moment and do things that you cannot do while you are at school.

The following are eight ways to enjoy every moment of break, relax and take advantage of being at home:

1. Visit with family.

It might seem obvious, but a lot of the time we become busy visiting with friends from home that we have not seen in months and forget that we also have not spent time with our families. Of course, seeing friends is important and a major part of break, but make sure to save some time to see your family, especially those younger cousins who look up to you and think that everything you do is amazing.

2. Read a book.

We spend so much time at college reading for exams, for writing papers and for class discussions that most of us can’t even remember the last book that we read. Take the time to sit down with a nice warm cup of hot chocolate and read a book for fun.

3. Spend a day in your town or a small town near you.

Find the local, small town coffee shop near you and go with a friend and just sip coffee and catch up. It’s a nice way to meet up with friends without too much planning needed. Also, go shopping at all of the locally owned stores and just walk around town. It’s a nice way to have a slowed-down pace of life and relax from the craziness of finals.

4. Pile on the layers and go for a hike.

Depending on the weather and where you live, pile on lots of layers and go for a winter hike. Take the time to do something active and enjoy the views of the area where you live. If there is too much snow on the ground, or no hiking near you, a scenic walk through your neighborhood or park is a great substitute.

5. Cook a meal for your family.

Thank your family for all of the support that they have given you throughout the semester and cook a family meal. It’s a perfect gift that everyone will enjoy and also provides some quality family time for everyone to talk during the meal that you prepared.

6. Take a day trip to a nearby city.

For me, Boston is a little over an hour and a half away and a fun day trip to take with family or friends. Walk around the city and enjoy the holiday decorations and lights.

7. Go on a shopping spree.

Take a trip to the outlets with friends and spend some of the holiday money and gift cards that you received. There are always some nice sales after the holidays and it also gives you the opportunity to return the gifts that you do not wish to keep.

8. Make a New Year's Resolution that you will keep.

Every year, Jan. 1 comes around and we make a new resolution to run a marathon, when you’ve never even run before, or travel to the rest of the 50 states. We make all of these huge resolutions and forget to think of little things that we could actually do. Think of a simple resolution for 2018.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
