Believe it or not--summer is approaching.

I know it seems like just yesterday when we were ringing in the new year. However, it's almost April, and summer will be here before we know it.

Summer is the time to relax and fill your days with your favorite hobbies that you don't have time enjoy during the school year. It's also a great time to save up some extra cash to avoid being broke and busy when school gets back in session.

Here are seven ways to save money this summer:

1. Keep a piggy bank.

I know it may seem old school, but loose change can really accumulate to some big bucks. Instead of shoving your change in your wallet or wherever else it ends up that ultimately leads to the couch, put it in a jar or piggy bank. At the end of the summer, find your nearest Coinstar or take it to the bank. Who knows, you may actually have some serious cash by the end of it.

2. Work a summer job.

Work is the last thing we want to do in the summer, but finding an easy summer job can help you plan for the upcoming school year and stash away some money for when you'll really need it. Whether it's a local job or an internship, working a few days a week can allow you to save money while still having enough free time to enjoy your summer.

3. Cook meals at home.

Eating at home can be hard during the school year, especially when we have classes from sunrise to sunset and no energy left over to cook. However, during the summer, it's farmers market season and there's plenty of time to head to the grocery store and plan some healthy, delicious meals. Not only will this give you a much needed break from the college diet (a.k.a. fast food diet), it will also save you a lot of money you would normally spend eating out.

4. Do chores around the neighborhood.

Summertime is a great time to pick up some freelance work in your neighborhood. Whether it's mowing lawns, gardening, babysitting or housesitting when your neighbors go on vacations, the possibilities are endless for making a quick buck.

5. Throw summer parties.

I know what you're thinking: how does throwing parties save money? The thought behind this one is that instead of going out with your friends a few nights a week to dinner or the bar and making a dent in your bank account, throw some summer parties in your backyard or community pool house. This can help you budget better and save money when you want to kick back with your friends.

6. Do activities that are free.

There are plenty of activities in the summertime that are free. Some examples include going for a walk in the park, window shopping at your local downtown area and going to the beach or pool. These are summertime classics that won't cost you a penny!

7. Sell crafts from home.

Many people have hobbies that include making arts, crafts and other products. If this is you, make an Etsy account or sell some of your creations online. This will keep you busy during the summer and earn you some money--you may even make a small business out of it.

I hope this summer brings sunshine, laughter and most importantly, big bucks for you all!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
