7 Ways To Combat Writer's Block

Trying to write but you can't find the words?

7 Ways To Combat Writer's Block

Have you ever sat in front of an empty Word document, just watching your curser blink irritably at you? Have you ever wanted to throw your laptop — or notebook for the old souls out there — across the room? Maybe you wanted to shout to the gods of writing for an idea to find you? I did just that before writing this article, and God only knows I'm not the only one.

If you're a writer struggling to put words to paper, you're in luck! I have complied some easy steps to let your wisdom flow.

1. Set your environment.

Where do you feel the most tranquil and at ease? Is there an area where you feel most comfortable? Do you need noise or music? Figure out the environment that is most helpful in clearing your mind and concentrating on you work. Try not to worry about that test in two weeks or those dishes that need to be done. Do whatever you need to get in the writing mood.

2. Get rid of distractions.

Put down that cell phone! Turn off the TV (unless that helps) and tuck away the tablet. You can do it, I promise. It's nearly impossible to get any writing done, much less start writing while getting sucked into social media. So, put away the technology until you have completed your piece!

3. Write.

Sure, this may sound redundant, but you will not get anywhere unless you start somewhere. Write. Write whatever comes to mind, whether it be the weather or your favorite pizza, or maybe a wizard brewing a potion. Write down your train of thought. It may feel unproductive, especially if you are thinking of wizards and need to write academically, but visually seeing ideas on paper is so useful.

4. Brainstorm.

Brainstorm however is easiest for you. Some appreciate making a bulleted list or outline. I personally do a flow chart so I can visually have an idea of my main and supporting points. Find a way to explore your ideas and maybe even try mapping out said ideas. Try adding color to make it more aesthetically pleasing!

5. Read some of your favorite quotes.

It's your favorite quote for a reason, right? Why is it your favorite? What about this quote inspires you? Search your bookshelf or the web for more inspirational quotes that might just be the spark you were looking for! My go to inspiration is good old "Leaves of Grass" by Walt Whitman.

6. Spend time with your pet.

This may seem silly, but sometimes all you need is unconditional love from someone who sees you as their sun, moon and stars. Whether you cuddle with your cat or play fetch with your puppy, being around a creature so innocent is refreshing.

7. Get some fresh air.

Step out of your hidey hole and breath in the fresh air! Or city air if that is applicable. Either way this change of scenery will get you moving and outdoors. Every direction you face holds the key to a great new piece of writing. Cheesy, I know, but still. Hundreds of writers have written their best works outdoors. What are you waiting for?

Hopefully you have found some or all of the tips helpful to jogging your creativity. Grab your favorite writing utensil and begin creating. What will your verse be?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
