7 Fool-Proof Tips For The Lone Traveler

Written fresh from a flight.

I love traveling. I grew up taking road trips across the country. I’ve sat in the car for 12 hours and gotten home at 1 AM the next day.

Planes are a different story. I have flown before, but those were with family. I had never checked myself in and went through security alone.

Nonetheless, it’s been a year of firsts. (I did move 700 miles away.) Here are few tips for effortless air travel.

1. Have your confirmation number memorized.

If you aren’t checking in online, it’s a hassle to locate your flight number while holding all your bags and a growing line behind your kiosk. Print it out before hand, or if you are like me and prefer a hands-free method, write it in on your arm. A flick of the wrist and you have all your information. Your mom or dad isn't there to manage your passport or ID.

2. Know what time your flight departs.

This is a no-brainer, but if you are traveling through changing time zones, be aware of what timezone your flight is following. Also, know what time it will be when you land so you can plan your ride to your home/hotel/dorm accordingly.

3. Eat and drink beforehand.

It is not fun to trek to the gate on an empty stomach. You’ll be hangry and if something goes wrong you’ll be less likely to deal with it appropriately. Sure you’ll get some snacks and drinks on board, but is that TSA checked 50 calorie bag of mini pretzels really satisfying?

4. You don’t have to chat with your neighbors

Unless you want to talk to them, then go on ahead. Most people keep busy doing work or some don’t want to talk. Be polite and try not to elbow them by accident when they fall asleep.

5. Bring headphones and something to do.

If you aren't becoming BFFs with your neighbor, you'll need to keep busy. A book you've been waiting to read (I recommend The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas) or a show or movie will suffice. If you are a student like me, now might be a good time to study.

6. Double check that you have everything.

There’s nothing worse than realizing you left your cozy sweater on the plane. Even if you have to write a list on your arm, it will be worth the security.

7. Enjoy yourself.

Gaze out the window and lose yourself in the fluffy clouds. Look down below at all the miniature trees and houses. Admire the skyline of the city. Immerse yourself in a good book or conversation. You've made it on your flight, it's time for the joy of travel to kick in.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
