7 Thoughts You Have While Packing For College

As summer vacation comes to a close, many students are already back at college, those of us who aren't, are preparing for the big move back. Regardless if this is your first year or your fourth year away from home, the same thoughts still race through your mind. Here are seven common thoughts you have while packing for college.

1. Did I have this many bags last year?

We all assume that we will pack the most our freshman year, and after that will have learned what we need and don't need. While that may be true to some extent, it seems that we replace these items we don't need with others. So in the end, we end up with the same amount of stuff each year, if not more stuff.

2. Will I have room for all my clothes?

This is one of the biggest questions on my mind because half of my bags are full of clothes or shoes. Even though my rooms slowly get bigger through the years, I am pretty certain I slightly increase the amount of clothes each year. But somehow, I always manage to find space for them all.

3. Should I pack shorts and t-shirts or pants and sweatshirts?

Living in Ohio has taught me that you never know what the weather will be like, despite the season. So to be prepared, I always have a supply of clothes for all seasons.

4. Is this enough food/clothes/etc?

Even though my mound of boxes and bags seems large, there is always the after thought: did I bring enough? But it is always reassuring that if you run out of something, you do have money and there are plenty of stores just down the street. As long as your schedule permits a quick Walmart run.

5. Do I have to go to class? Can't I just live in the dorm for fun?

Most of us get caught up in the excitement of moving out and getting our own space away from home. But what we tend to forget is that it is not always laying around in the room watching TV and playing games and surfing the internet. Most of your week ACTUALLY consists of class, homework, food, and sleep.

6. What am I forgetting?

Without a doubt, no matter how many times you review your five packing lists, you always feel like you are forgetting something. Again, there is always Walmart.

7. What SHOULDN'T I take?

Probably the biggest question I ask myself. I try and reduce the amount of clothes and decorations I take, but it never works out that way.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
