7 Thoughts We All Have While Running Off To Class

Questions that we ask ourselves to get our brains up to speed with the rest of the world.

7 Thoughts We All Have While Running Off To Class
University of Wisconsin

No matter the time of day, our brains don’t start to fully function until our professor starts talking, and even then it’s challenging, even with coffee in hand. As the fall and winter months blow in with a cold breeze, it makes it even more difficult to roll ourselves out of bed and make our frizzy haired selves walk our legs to class. But as we walk to class in a daze, our brains play tricks on us to constantly make us freak out until we actually sit down in our seat. Here are some, not so fully functioning, thoughts we all have while walking or jogging to class.

1. How much time do I have before the professor starts speaking?

30 SECONDS! In that brief moment when our stomachs drop, we realize that there’s a back entrance to the class and no one except the person we’ll have to shimmy past at the end of the back row will know that we’re late. So calm down and stop thinking that this trot we’re doing is going to get us there any quicker.

2. Did I change out of my extra-large t-shirt that I wore to bed?

QUICK, LOOK DOWN! That was a close one, not only did we change our shirt but we remembered the pants part of the outfit too. Now we may have just switched from one large, baggy shirt to another large, baggy flannel, but at least we changed. Hey, and we even match, sort of.

3. I really want breakfast.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Yeah, we know. Except sleep is the most important time of the day; thus, we have to prioritize and breakfast just didn’t make the cut today. Except now we regret it. Maybe we have an old granola bar in the bottom of our backpack.

4. Did I grab my keys?

WAIT, WHERE ARE THEY? We always grab our keys, we’ve never once locked ourselves out of our room when we rushed out for class, but we still spend time freaking ourselves out that we may have actually done it this time.

5. Don’t get hit by a car.

BEEEEEEP! Please pay attention to what we’re doing, this isn’t our own little world, and frankly, there are other humans around that aren’t on their way to class. So for their sanity, and ours, pay attention to what we’re doing and do not walk out in front of a car, unless you think it’s a university vehicle and they’ll pay for your tuition, then it’s worth contemplating.

6. Do I have time for a nap today?

Yes, we did just wake up. So what? There’s nothing wrong with thinking about going back to sleep in an hour and a half. It’s like thinking about what we’re going to do for dinner while we’re eating lunch. You don’t need it right now but it’s not completely off the table for later.

7. Did we have homework due today?

EVERYONE STOP! We walk into class and see some proactive person working on their homework and immediately get freaked out. It doesn’t cross our mind that they’re clearly working on math and this is an English class, who knows what our professor thinks we’re capable of?

All in all, we made it to class and pretty on time, give or take 30 seconds. We’re sitting down with coffee in hand prepared to start the day, until we realize that we’re too busy today and the nap is off the table, there’s no paying attention now.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
