Because I am obsessed with cooler weather and the fall now approaching all of my article ideas have recently began to stem from the idea of fall. In the south there are things that are an absolute must to do as fall starts to show up. They are activities we in the south consider a staple to enjoy the fall. These things are:
1. Attend a Friday or Saturday night football game
2.) Pumpkin Carving
This has been a tradition of mine for years. If you've never carved a pumpkin I encourage you to do so. It can be a trying time that requires much patience, but it is one that will bring about much laughter especially if you choose to do it in a group. I will never forget having to lay on the couch at an angle scraping out my pumpkin clean because I couldn't sit on the floor since I had broken my leg. I refused to let that get to me and hold me back from one of my favorite traditions. Unfortunately I had very little luck at a perfect pumpkin this year, but the memories will last a life time.
3.) Homecoming
Maybe this is also something that is elsewhere too, but I know in the south we do homecoming big and we go all out. Nothing is a limit for us. People and alumni come in from all over and have weekend long parties. It is a weekend like no other filled with fun, family, and fooooood.
4.) Get lost in a Corn Maze
One of my favorite family traditions that we have been doing every year during fall break is going to the corn maze. In fact, I am pretty sure that people from all over the south come to enjoy this one rather than just my small community. There is a local place called Seward Farms and there is so much excitement surrounding that place. They are very family friendly and have hayrides, a big jumping pillow, rides, pony rides, and of course a big hayride with so much more fun all focused around the children. Near Halloween they host an event for the older guests such as a haunted hayride and haunted corn maze, but of course I prefer to enjoy the Disney day with my niece and nephew and skip the scariness for princesses and Disney characters.
5.) Fall Craft Nights
I love getting together with my friends and Pinteresting the latest crafts that I can try out myself. I may not always be good at it, but it is always a good time putting my craft skills to the test. I definitely suggest you hosting a girls night and put a holiday movie on in the background and begin crafting. We in the south love DIY projects.
6.) Bonfires
To me, this is one of the biggest indicators that fall is here. I love having sitting around a nice toasty fire while roasting marshmallows on sticks with my family and friends. I actually was able to enjoy my first one of the season this weekend with my family and it was the greatest. I don't know about you, but I enjoy toasting the marshmallow until its black and eating it all up. Also, if you've never had a bonfire on the beach then what are you doing with your life?
Some of these may be no different from the fall that they experience in the north or elsewhere, but we in the south do typically go all out with these few fall traditions and I wouldn't have them any other way.
