7 Things You Miss About Home While At College
Allie Olnowich

Between August and November, you are away at school either in a dorm, house, or apartment. You try so hard to make it feel like home, but in the end, it will never live up to your room at home. Here are 7 things every college student misses while being away from home.

1. Your bed.

Nothing beats your bed at home. There are no words to describe the comfort you feel stretched out in your queen sized bed under the covers in your perfectly air-conditioned room surrounded by your favorite stuffed animals.

2. Home Cooked Meals.

Nothing beats a homemade meal from your mom or a perfectly grilled burger by your dad. Dining hall food just doesn't compare and even when you try and cook, the food never tastes the same.

3. Your friends.

Sure you might have your friends and even best friends at school, but nothing compares to the friendships that have survived since elementary school.

4. Having more than $5 in your wallet at one time.

Isn't it nice when you don't have to pay for your own groceries or your parents offer to take you out to dinner? It's nice to not have to order off the kid's menu every once in a while.

5. Your pet.

The best feeling is opening the door to your house and seeing your favorite animal staring up at you. Nothing beats cuddling up in bed or on the couch with your best friend.

6. Not having to pay for laundry.

It's nice to not have to pay $1.50 per a load of laundry, but it's even better when your parents offer to do your laundry for you.

7. Walking around town.

Nothing is more comforting than being able to walk around the place you call home. You know the ins and outs and all of the shortcuts to get from place to place. The feeling of being home is beyond comforting.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
