7 Things You Can Leave At Home When You Go To College

Listen to your mom. You really aren't going to use all of it.

Yesterday I moved back home after finishing my freshman year of college. It took at least 11 trips up and down the stairs to get all of my stuff out of my dorm and loaded into my car. Unfortunately, half of it were things I never ever touched in the entire year I was there. So to save yourself the trouble, here's some things you might as well just leave at home and save yourself the trouble of!

1. All of your clothes.

Trust me, you really aren't going to wear them all. It's just a hassle to bring them all the way up to your dorm when you move in and all the way back down when you move out. Plus, you can always switch them out when you go home for the weekend! Just start out with your favorite things, and you can add or take away clothes later if you need it. And don't forget about all the free t-shirts you're going to collect!

2. Kitchen appliances.

Chances are, you probably aren't going to cook more than six times while you're there. So just go use your meal plan and get toast from the dining hall instead. Plus, let's be honest, you're going to be busy and looking for cheap food, so you'll probably be eating more Taco Bell than anything. So don't worry about all the appliances. You'll have plenty of options.

3. Your entire collection of books.

You really are going to be busy, and while you totally can skip that night out partying and stay home curled up with a good book, you aren't going to do that every weekend. You can bring a couple of books at a time and switch those out too. Do a library system with your house! Take a couple books, read them, bring them back home, and then take a new batch home!

4. Too many decorations.

Yes, your room will be super cute. And yes, you should decorate your dorm to make it feel like home. However, don't go overboard or you'll be the one carrying a four-foot giant sunflower down three flights of stairs at the end of the year (me). You can make your dorm room feel homey without covering every inch of your wall.

5. Prohibited Items.

I came to college with my really neat lava lamp thinking, "It's not like my RA will really see this. I'll just bring it." But what do ya know, three weeks later I was bringing my lava lamp back home. The paranoia of her finding it was just too much! Just leave those things at home. It really isn't worth getting in trouble just to have your Scentsy collection in your dorm. Buy Febreeze.

6. All of your makeup.

I know you plan on waking up early every morning and contouring your face with a smokey eye, winged eye liner, and a bright red lip. And you probably will do that every once in a while! But not every day. There's a better chance that you're going to wake up at 7:54 for your 8 A.M. and you'll show up in your pajamas with last night's makeup and bedhead. So just bring your favorite essentials, and leave the rest at home.

7. Anything you can buy at Target.

Don't worry about bringing every little thing with you. You can always just hop on over to Target and buy the things you forgot. So don't fret, it isn't the end of the world if you forget your favorite toothpaste. It's replaceable. And if you get there and realize that you need more than you brought, you can go buy it, or just bring it back the next time you go home. So bring the stuff you need and reevaluate later. Good luck!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
