Almost everybody knows of the Kentucky Derby, but not everybody knows what it means to have a Triple Crown winner. In horse racing history, it is extremely rare for a horse to win the Triple Crown. This is due to the long length of the last leg of the Triple Crown. Many horses that win the Kentucky Derby go on to win the Preakness Stakes, but fail to win the Belmont. The last winner of the triple crown was American Pharoah in 2015, and it is now being predicted that Nyquist may also be capable of pulling off a Triple Crown win. Here are some facts about the Triple Crown that many people do not know:
1. The Triple Crown consists of three races, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. It is known as the World Series of horse racing.
2. Before American Pharoah won the Triple Crown, it had been 37 years since a horse had won. The Winner in 1978 was Affirmed.
3. The Belmont Stakes is the longest of the three races.
4. Secretariat is known for his Triple Crown win due to his fast times and his win in the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths.
5. If a horse wins the Triple Crown and goes on to run in the Breeders Cup Classic and wins, it will be known as a Grand Slam win, which is what American Pharoah accomplished in 2015.
6. There have only been 12 Triple Crown Winners.
7. Only colts have won the Triple Crown. No filly has ever taken the title. However, three fillies have won the Kentucky Derby and only two of those fillies have completed all three of the races. (picture below: Winning Colors)
