Congratulations, you just got into college. Whether it is your #1 choice or a school you only applied to because your parents made you, you officially know you’re going to college. As you’ve already probably realized, high school doesn’t really matter anymore. You should still try and all (don’t fail out) but you don’t need to be the perfect student anymore. This of course means you are going to have a lot of free time between today and that fateful day in August when you move into wherever you end up going. As someone who’s taken the journey that you’re about to take, here are seven things you should do before you move into college.

  • Spend time with your Family
  • Get in shape
  • Find something you like to do and spend a lot of time doing it
  • Get a job
  • Get a good group chat with your friends from home
  • Befriend one of your teachers from home
  • Binge on a TV show

1.Spend time with your family

Look you may not believe me now, but you ARE going to miss your family. It’s weird being in a new place without people you’ve always been with. Sometimes you miss them. The best way to counter this is to spend time with them while you’re still with them. This may mean long car rides or just being around them. This summer I ran a 5k race with my Dad and I can still picture it vividly. Did we win the race, absolutely not. But we bonded during it, choosing to stick together during the race rather than run at our own independent paces. It’s moments like this that make you smile when you miss your family.

2. Get in shape

This one relates to the summer more than the remaining school year, but try to be in great shape going to school. Millions of people across the world wish they were in better shape, but never have the time to do so. You, however, do have the time, so hit the gym.

3.Find something you like to do and spend a lot of time doing it.

Orientation kind of sucks, it’s really boring and tedious at times. The common thread of every activity is they ask you to talk about something you like to do, something your passionate about. It’s going to stink if you get to that day in August and you have nothing to talk about. Whether it is Rap Music or the Rocky Franchise, get it together and find something you’re into.

4. Get a Job

I know that you want to spend the summer before your freshmen year just hanging out with friends, but get a job. At a minimum, it’s an easy way to make money to either pay for tuition or to have some spending money once you are at school. Additionally being used to having a schedule and having to focus is going to make the transition back to school a lot easier.

5.Get a good group chat with your friends from home

Having a great group chat with your friends from home is a necessity for college, like they should put it on those college-shopping lists. For one it will allow you coordinate what you are all going to do when you get home for break, but more importantly it will let you keep in touch with your friends from home, and will supply you with Dank Memes.

6.Befriend one of your teachers from home

Hopefully you’ve already done this in the last 3+ years, but if not, get on it ASAP. Having a teacher to talk to is a major benefit. You can ask them for advice about college, discuss through what you want to take once in college, and just get general guidance.

7.Binge on a TV show

Nothing is better for bonding with people you just met thank liking the same shows. I became friends with my closest friend in college because we both like Bob’s Burgers, I’ve gotten into parties because I referenced It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. So Binge, Binge like there’s no tomorrow.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
