7 Things That Define You And Your Best Friend
Her Campus

When we see the word "friend," most of us can picture those in our lives who fit into this category. Yet, even fewer can pin-point one person who we associate as a best friend. Every human being has the ability to spread love and kindness, and that means people are out there who sincerely want the best for us, even if we have yet to meet them. Just be patient.

Like anyone else, I've been through my share of friends who have come and gone. But there's one person who has been truly consistent since we met. And I call this girl my best friend.

As we go through this journey called life together, I want you to know a few things:

1. Have we even ever argued before?

I seriously don't think so. And if we did, I clearly don't remember. Our views on politics and religion may be different, but we know how to respect each other's beliefs and opinions like mature adults (and like everyone should). We genuinely listen to one another when we speak. Most importantly, we can say what's on our minds without judgement. That whole "you're not best friends unless you've survived an argument" is such a load of manure, and we can surely attest to that.

2. We're never under each other's feet.

We can go a month without seeing each other and simply pick up from where we left off. You're the low-maintenance friend I am so grateful for. We both hate clingy, and it just so happens we're the opposite of that! If one of us has to cancel, we don't turn into the Hulk. We just reschedule until we both have time again.

3. We can proudly say that we're still friends with our best friend from high school.

How many years has it been? Yeah, a lot of years. Many value their high school experience from the countless "friends" they had but don't even talk to anymore. I, on the other hand, measure it by the one true friend that stuck with me after the high school craze came to an end. We watched each other grow into the strong young women we are today.

4. We can randomly call each other and gripe about whatever topic is invading our thoughts at the moment.

I can't even count how many times I've called you to complain about all the lame things people say and do. But you just sit there like a champ and listen to it anyway. You can give great advice, just like the sister I never had. I hope I give to you just as much as you do for me!

5. Speaking of sister, you may have been born to different parents but you're officially my hand-selected sibling.

My Sista from another Mista! What is so wonderful about friends is that we get to choose them. I chose you to be a part of my life and I wouldn't have had it any other way!

5. You are my maid of honor before I even have to pick.

I need you standing up there with me on my future wedding day. Most importantly, I value your opinion of the man I will be marrying. Sometimes love blinds us, so you must be there to snap me back into reality if the guy is a total whack job. But knowing us, we already have good sense to know who will be best for us. It is our duty as friends to help guide each other into the right directions. I pray for your happiness every day because you deserve to be happy in all that you choose to do.

6. "Don't let what he wants eclipse what you need. He's very dreamy, but he is not the sun. You are." - Cristina Yang

This is in the rankings of my favorite quotes of all time, and of course, you come to mind. I want you to know that any man that walks onto your path, including the one you choose to marry, is your partner, your significant other. Meaning, he is not above you and you are not above him. Neither should have to sacrifice their dreams to try and fulfill what the other wants. Don't change who you are for anyone. Don't settle. You have abilities and characteristics about you that no one else on this planet shares. Always remember who you are.

7. You're my person.

Yes, another ode to Grey's anatomy. But it's true. All the friends I've come across, they're nothing short of lovely. But no one compares to you. I can be my most complete self around you and can tell you anything. You've seen me cry my eyes out, laugh to the verge of urination, and get angry until steam is escaping my ears. You've been there for the good times and the bad, and have seen me grow over the years. No matter where our lives take us, I know we will always have each other to come back to.

Much love, my best friend. God sure was watching over me when He sent me you.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
