Salespeople are not always the scheminging, lying creeps that you see on TV. Some of us are actually nice, genuine people that like their jobs and enjoy interacting with customers. While there are some bad seeds out there, the majority of the time salespeople tend to be straight-up with customers. Since the world of sales is a jungle sometimes, here's a short list of things salespeople say that we actually mean.
1. "This is a really good sale/price for that item!"
Sales change constantly so if a salesperson says it's a good price, it actually is. Plus we don't want you to come back next week when the price has gone up and not be happy that you didn't buy it while it was cheaper.
2. "Sorry, I can’t change the price."
Salespeople are low on the totem pole of employees in a company. So no, I can't change the price, my manager can't change the price, if you would like to call the Customer Service number for corporate be my guest.
3. "You’re getting a better deal than I do with my discount!"
You are. With coupons, special promotions and additional sales, customers often come out on top of the discount game. Trust me I wish my employee discount could compete but alas evil corporate wants your money more than they want mine.
4. "If you like it, I would get it now because we’ll probably run out."
Employees tend to know the shipment schedule plus we've seen how many of that product we have left in the stock room and we know how popular that product is. As salespeople, we want customers to leave happy so buy it before it's gone.
5. "No, we don’t have any new products in the back."
Speaking of the stockroom, why would we hide new product back there? That makes no sense from a business perspective. The whole point of being a salesperson is to assist customers in buying things. So if there's new products, they go out to the sales floor where they can be bought.
6. "Additional sales only happen around holidays."
Unfortunately this is usually fact. No matter how much I wish otherwise, there usually isn't an extra coupon or special deal unless some sort of holiday is approaching. And again, if there was some sort of additional sale going on, the salesperson would tell you because then you might be more motivated to buy something.
7. “I like your _____."
I do. Salespeople see so many customers per shift that if one takes the time to give you a compliment, we mean it. I might even ask where you got it and hey if that leads into a great conversation about this product you should buy (because it's on sale for a great price) then yay. If not, you still got a genuine compliment and I got to give it to you so it's a win-win.
