The other day, as I was in the dining hall bathroom, I heard two girls having a casual conversation as they stared at themselves in the mirror. One girl said to her friend, "Life would be so much easier if I was as hot as a Kardashian."
In my head, for a quick five seconds, I agreed. This world places so much value on looks. If only I was hotter; life would be twenty times better...
However, I soon remembered how much I focus on my looks daily. I realized that when I die, being hot won't even matter, and there are so many other characteristics I would rather be than "hot."
1. Funny
When I'm 80, chances are I won't look the same as I looked when I was 20 years old and in college. However, I will always have my sense of humor, no matter what. I would rather be known for funny jokes and a contagious laugh than being what the world considers "hot."
2. Cultured
I'd rather leave this world one day saying I've seen it, and I've traveled across the globe. I want to see different cultures and learn something new from everyone I meet. I want that more than I want to be whistled at while walking on the street.
3. Confident
Being confident is not a bad thing; it is important for every women to love herself first before anyone else loves her. Knowing your worth and value in society leads you to becoming a happier person, who can conquer anything.
4. Joyful
This one is my favorite fruit of the spirit. There is nothing quite as beautiful as waking up every morning, despite trials, and knowing that the Lord has blessed you with a new day and a purpose greater than being "hot." Joyfulness is also contagious and makes others develop joy as well.
5. Servant-hearted
Acting on the compassion in your heart in one of the most beautiful things one can do. Using your hands and feet for a purpose greater than your needs shows your love for others and God. I would rather be known for giving to others than for having an attractive appearance.
6. Independent
I never want to be dependent on a man or anyone else. Being dependent on someone else for happiness, financial stability, or the ability to love is not the life for me. Independence shows strength and confidence.
7. Someone who leaves a legacy
I want to leave a legacy this world a better place. I care about that more than I care about being known as an attractive girl or as good eye-candy for guys. At the end of it all, we will all die, and I hope that people will remember me for my legacy of love and kindness.
So maybe I don't have the body of a Kardashian, but that is okay. Women in this society need to remember that our life is about more than being attractive. We have the ability to use our talents and gifts for the Lord, and if we put our fruits of the spirit above having a good body, I have a good feeling that this world can be a better place.
Maybe next time I go to the mirror to complain about how I look, I'll instead ask myself "how can I fulfill God's purpose better?"
