7 Things You Know As An Older Sibling

The day that little monster of a sibling was born was the best and worst day of your life.

If you're an older sibling, you've likely either wished you were a younger sibling or an only child. You constantly wonder why your little brother or sister receives all the attention when you are clearly the better child. As much as you may not be able to stand them at times, having them around can definitely have its perks.

1. Your Stuff Magically Begins To Disappear.

It may be clothes from your closet or headphones from your backpack; you’ll spend days retracing your steps with no luck. Your path doesn’t include your sibling’s room because you never went in there in the first place. Unfortunately, that is exactly where it would be: in the huge pile of other stuff that is yours too!

2. They Are The Only Ones Who Truly Understand Your Parents.

Even if you think you have friends with similar parents, no parents are the exact same. Living in the same household, following or not following the same rules and getting yelled at for the same things (for the most part), are things nobody else could even begin to understand. When your parents upset you, only they can listen with 100% sympathy, care and concern.

3. You Can Always Count On Them At Boring Parties.

When your parents drag you to a family party where there are no kids your age, you can always count on hanging out with your younger sibling. Whether you sit there on your phones or make fun of all the other guests, you both conquer the miserable experience together.

4. They Keep Your Life Interesting.

Although they may be the most irritating being you could possibly imagine, the house is far too quiet without their presence. You live for the constant bickering and teasing because their reactions are by far the best form of entertainment.

5. They Get Things Much Sooner Than You Did.

It's absolutely infuriating when they get a phone at the same time you do, but they are several years younger. If you had to wait until you were 13, why shouldn't they? I guess that logic is the least of your parents' concerns when a monster like your sibling comes about.

6. You Become A Second Parent.

As much as your sibling hates your lecturing and nagging, they know you’re only trying to care for them when your parents aren’t around. They are so fortunate to have someone to watch over them when they fall sick or pack their things when they leave them behind.

7. They Make You The Best Person Possible.

As an older sibling, it’s important to be a good role model. This responsibility prevents you from getting into trouble, staying on track academically and being respectful to your friends and family. Setting this example for them is critical to their success and wellbeing in the future.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
