7 Things Every Villanovan Will Miss About Their Freshman Year

As freshman year comes to a close, I am really starting to appreciate the advantages of being a first-year student.

College flies by. It feels like yesterday that I was moving into my dorm and trying to figure my way around the campus. Now I have two more weeks left of my freshman year, and I can definitely say I have grown and learned a lot. I am definitely ready to be a sophomore, but there are some things that I will miss about freshman year.

1. South Campus

Coming to a new school can be tough. However, living on south with only freshman makes the transition easier. You know anyone you walk by is in the same position as you, and it allows you to make friendships easier. South campus gives the freshman a nice bubble in which to be comfortable as they start their college experience.

2. The Spit

The Spit is definitely the best dining hall on campus, and I will definitely miss it when I am stuck eating at the Pit next year. It is also nice to have a dining hall for just freshman because you always see familiar faces while getting a meal.

3. The school work

Although freshman year can seem like a lot more work than high school, it only gets harder for here. Next year when I am in my major courses, I will definitely miss those easier introductory courses.

4. Orientation

You only get one orientation, right before your freshman year classes start. It was a great way to get acclimated to the school, and I found some of my closest friends through my orientation group. It is also nice to have a few days at school to relax before classes start.

5. Winning a national championship

As great of a basketball team we have, it is unlikely that we will win another championship during our time at Villanova (but who knows! Go Cats!). Winning our freshman year was extremely fun, and an experience I will cherish throughout my next three years here.

6. Blaming everything on being a freshman

There are a lot of things that you have to get used to coming to a new school. If you made a mistake, you could always blame it on lack of experience. Once you begin your sophomore year, however, you no longer have that luxury.

7. Not having to choose a major and look for internships/jobs

I got through my entire freshman year without any pressure about deciding on a major. Next year, however, I have to declare. Also, there is no stress about interviewing and looking for internships and jobs, for they are not required as a freshman. This will be the last year, however, that I will be able to relax about these things.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
