The 7 Stages Of Getting Ready
The Odyssey

Your group chat finally decided on plans for the night and it's about to go down. You're excited to go out, have some drinks, be with friends. It's Friday night -- anything can happen.

And then you realize you have about two hours before you're supposed to go out and you still need to get ready. The process must begin.

Here are the stages of getting ready, as told by a twenty something girl.

1. Decide on your outfit

This could take some time. First you have to consider where you're going. Then you have to ask your girls what they're wearing. Then you pull at least four different outfits from your closet and snapchat each one to your friends and make them vote. And don't even get me started on picking shoes.

2. Do your hair

Do you want it straight, curly, wavy, up, down? No matter what style you pick, unless you have super short hair, you're spending at least a half hour styling your mane. Add an extra ten minutes to hair spray the sh*t out of your hair so the style sticks.

3. Buy some more time in the group chat

"Anybody ready to go?"

"Uh...just ten more minutes, almost done!"

4. Change your outfit 2-3 more times

Your friends have reassured you a billion times that the shirt you're wearing looks great on you but you're just not sure. Better go back and try on at least another 5 shirts.

5. Put on your makeup

This is possibly the longest part of this whole affair. Depending on how skilled at makeup you are, and how much you actually wear, this could take up to an hour. You're gonna look damn pretty at the end of it though.

6. Re-do your eyeliner 4 more times

One eye always comes out weird. Always.

7. Done!

After two hours of this madness, you're finally ready. And that's when it happens. The group chat pings and you open the message to find someone is cancelling on the plans last minute. Slowly but surely the night's plans just fall apart. Try not to cry or you'll ruin all that eyeliner you worked so hard on.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
