As a freshman coming to college, I was quite worried about the relationship I would have with my roommate. I had heard the horror stories of stealing clothes, playing loud music and constantly bringing people over. Thankfully, however, my roommate does none of those things and is now one of my best friends.

Here’s how to know if you and your roommate are the right match:

1. You share the same taste in music

Playing music loudly isn’t an issue when you like the same kind. Whether it be classical, rock, or pop, knowing you can play your music without headphones in your room is a sure way to bond. Not to mention, they understand your music feels.

2. You have deep talks at night

When you go to bed but still have something to talk about, that’s when you know your bond is solid.

3. You do chores together

Brushing your teeth together, taking out the trash together, cleaning your room together...menial activities become fun when you are with the right person.

4. You share gross and embarrassing stories

Embarrassment doesn’t exist when you’ve found a person you can spill all to.

5. You think about the other when something good (or bad) happens to you

My texts to my roommate consist of me ranting about the loud music next door and about the A I got on a recent test. Anything of substance that happens during the day, my first thought is ‘can’t wait to tell her!'

6. They know your tastes in food

My roommate knows my favorite dishes and has even cooked me food on several occasions. She also buys me cake pops, which are my favorite thing at Starbucks.

7. Spending your whole weekend with them locked in your room doesn’t sound like a bad idea

It’s a treat! You even miss them when you’re at home.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
