Media, be that multimedia journalism, broadcast, strategic communications, radio, the list can go on. Media majors have more fun than most majors *cough* engineers *cough*. We don't just play on our computers all day, we get out there and interview people, shoot videos, write articles and help society (most of us, anyway). Media majors work hard and play hard, can I get an amen? I love my major and I know my fellow media classmates do too.
1. You get confused looks when you say you are a "Strat Comm" major
"What was that?" "I have never heard of it." Yeah, I'm sorry you live under a rock. I know what my major is and I'm 95 percent sure I know what I am going to do with it.
2. You get the same boring comments like:
"You're so brave going the creative route, what are you going to do with that?"
3. And this:
"The media is terrible, don't end up like that!" I'm sorry that some people take tabloid journalism too far but I'm not that bad of a person. Real news comes first.
4. And this:
"You were so smart, why not become a teacher?" Thanks? So you don't think I'm smart enough to succeed in a field I enjoy?
5. You read and write more than anything
"The best way to become a better writer is to read more." I believe it. Reading is one of my favorite past times.
6. You actually enjoy your projects
Creating a social media campaign? Love it. Creating a media kit? I got you. Make a poster with Indesign and Illustrator? No prob. Write five news stories, film and edit three videos and interview seven athletes in a week? *hesitates* SURE THING!
7. The smell of the JB has become the stench of hope and despair
The Paul Miller Journalism Building has a specific odor that radiates defeat and victory for those who pass through.
8. Your friends and family wonder if you are actually learning anything or just playing
I'm sorry that you didn't have this much fun learning in college.
