Every January I find myself making the 10-hour drive back to school, overcome with sadness that the magical holiday season has come to an end. Winter break consisted of going out on a Monday just because you could, sleeping in until noon, and only having to worry about taking the dog for a walk.
Now back to reality filled with schoolwork, job applications and the balance between responsibilities and an exciting social life. But hey, on the bright side it’s a new year – hello 2017, hello new me!
Hello new me… Ah, the dreaded realization that you should probably make a new year’s resolution that you’re inevitably going to fail to follow through with anyways. But not this year. Fail no longer with these seven new year’s resolutions that you’ll be sure to follow through with:
1. Try something new
This one can be a year-long goal or a one-time thing, just promise to try something you aren’t used to or are interested in. Whether it’s going vegan for a week or joining a new organization, keep your mind open and gain a new perspective.
2. Invest in yourself
Your body deserves to be pampered. Invest in a facial mask from Lush or a Moroccan oil hair treatment and make a pact to use it at least once a week. You won’t regret it.
3. Revamp your routine
Notice this isn’t titled “Get in Shape” or “Get Fit.” Getting in shape is always at the top of everyone’s resolution list. I mean who doesn’t dream of looking like a Victoria’s Secret model? But getting in shape isn’t always the easiest task. Find a new routine, or even a new workout buddy who will motivate you to stay on track. It’s a lot easier to say yes to going to the gym and completing that Kayla Itsines workout if you have a friend that is willing to struggle through it with you.
4. Seek out new opportunities
Whether it’s applying to write for an online blog (hello Odyssey!) or joining a professional association such as PRSSA or AMA, it’s always good to broaden your horizons and seek out new opportunities. Networking is a great tool to have in the future, so start the year right by finding at least one new connection.
5. Get more sleep
Now this one I’m sure everyone agrees with. But sometimes it’s easier said than done. Instead of pushing to finish another episode of Friday Night Lights on Netflix, resist the urge and hit the sack. Your body will thank you the next morning when you’re headed to that dreaded 8 a.m. Better yet, power down completely an hour before bed (seriously, grab a book instead of your phone) for a better night’s sleep.
6. Do something for someone else
This one can be as simple as holding the door for someone, giving someone a compliment, or joining a new volunteer organization. You’ll not only be making a difference in someone else’s life, but yours as well. When you do good for others, you will feel better about yourself and will have a stronger self-esteem.
7. Set A Goal
Do you want to make Dean’s list this semester? Or want to run a 5K by the spring? Make the commitment and put in the effort to reach that goal. Break up your goal into smaller check points and reward yourself along the way when you meet each check point.
