7 Reasons You Should Stop Saying The R-Word

I hear the word "retarded" used way too much on a daily basis. Here are reasons why it should be stopped.

7 Reasons You Should Stop Saying The R-Word
Catherine Campbell

1. Because you are hurting someone.

You are actively hurting someone with any variety of disabilities. When you use this word you are hurting those who simply want to be accepted and understood.

2. Because you "growing up in a different time," is not an excuse.

I understand times change and terms that used to be normal now become hurtful and it would be a lot to keep up with. But, not really. I have great-grandparents who are in their 80's who have never said that word because they know it to be hurtful and not appropriate. There are no excuses.

3. Because using it is the same as using a racial slur.

A racial slur is offensive because it is a derogatory term used in times past that hurt those today because it reminds them of the discrimination they faced. This is the same as those with special needs. People with special needs are just that: People who have special needs. These people used to be treated horribly as if they were not human when that term was actively used.

4. Because you aren't just meaning, "stupid."

When you say, "That's retarded," you say it because people with special needs used to be called "mentally retarded." You're associating people with special needs as being stupid. They are not. They are competent and beautiful and deserve respect.

5. Because it has been taken out of the medical dictionary.

Saying someone with Down syndrome, autism, etc. is "mentally retarded," is also not okay. Neither is, "handicapped." Say the name of their specific disability or simply say, "special needs." Because that term is long gone.

6. Because they never did anything to you.

These people are the happiest, most loving individuals you will ever come in contact with. They would probably love you despite the fact you are being insensitive with your word choice.

7. Because I said so.

If I hear that word I promise it will not be ignored and it will not be pushed under the rug. It will be awkward and confrontational. Make it easier for both of us and be respectful to my friends and do not use this ugly word towards such amazing and inspiring people.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
