7 Reasons Why My Mom Could Take Meghan Trainor's Mom In A Fight

In honor of my mom’s arrival for the fall break weekend, I sat down to brainstorm some of the reasons why I adore this woman. The best way to describe our relationship is by comparison to Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, with our sarcastic banter and unwavering support of one another. My mom has always known when to be my parent and when to be my best friend, and there is no limit to the amount of respect I have for her. Meghan Trainor’s “Mom” song is just full of fighting words, because it just isn't possible that her mom is cooler than mine.

1.) She has fantastic fashion sense.

To anyone who has ever told me they like my style, we both have this woman to thank. She let me go through phases and try some questionable looks (namely a peach covered grandma-esque dress with a doily Peter Pan collar), but when I finally came around to asking her for help, she had all the answers for me.

2.) She live texts the Real Housewives Reunions with me.

The two of us will drop whatever we are doing to watch our shows together. This includes: leaving the kitchen counter covered in dishes when The People vs OJ comes on, downloading the ABC app to watch Scandal in the car, and live texting Housewives reunions despite being nine states apart.

3.) She worked hard to chase her dreams.

Since she was 16, my mom knew that she wanted to be a lawyer. She worked at various jobs throughout her undergraduate and law school years, and then worked in her chosen field of law for five years. When she got pregnant with me, she decided she wanted to stay home and raise her family. The fact that she worked her entire life towards her dreams, and then decided her new dream was me is incredibly inspiring.

4.) We share shoes.

There is nothing better than being the same shoe size as this woman. We go on trips to Marshall’s Mega Shoe Shop, have VIP status on Zappos, and she texts me in the middle of classes asking me if there’s anything I would wear a particular pair of shoes with. Her taste in shoes is obviously an extension of her incredible fashion sense, and I was raised to never underestimate the influence a good pair of shoes can have on an outfit.

5.) She’s a better college student than me.

I, much like Carrie Bradshaw, am very protective of my shoes, and I work myself into a frenzy just thinking about something happening to them. Wearing them out to dive bars and frat parties is my absolute nightmare. Whenever I get overwhelmed with the idea of my brand new leather sandals being in the presence of other teenagers, my mom always tells me to just wear the shoes and live my life.

6.) She always sends the best advice.

My mom has a stockpile of various tranquil scenes with the words, "Just breathe" typed over it. She has always told me to never compromise my values, forget who I am, or drink the KoolAid. Whenever I get discouraged, she writes back #WWOPD and I have to ask myself, "What would Olivia Pope Do?" And then I do just that.

7.) She’s my best friend.

Meghan Trainor and her mom may be best friends too, but ain't nobody got a mom like mine.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
