"Gossip Girl here. Your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite." Anyone who was a fan of one of the best teen dramas to ever hit the small screen knew that meant the beginning of another episode filled with anything from revenge and espionage to romance and love triangles. These privileged, elite Manhattanites that viewers dutifully followed from 2007-2012 may have done everything to the extreme, like parties and scheming and yes, in some cases, sex, drugs and alcohol, but somehow they were able to reach their audience. Despite representing the children of the 1%, they were relatable to viewers. What's more, those viewers were able to feel for and with the characters all while being transformed into the opulent world of excess that was Gossip Girl's portrayal of the Upper East Side. This made Gossip Girl a critically acclaimed show, but lots of shows accomplish that in their time on air. For Gossip Girl, the devil is in the details, and those details are what make it transcend time for a generation of viewers.
1. The fashion. From the designers (Elie Saab, Diane Von Furstenberg and Missoni, to name a few) to the way they paired and wore their clothes (who knew uniforms, headbands and ascots could be chic?), Gossip Girl reigned supreme when it came to the fashion department. Their wasn't a viewer who didn't dream of stealing these characters' closets. Even the men's fashion game was remarkable.
2. The music. For six seasons, Gossip Girl managed to pick the best tunes, ranging from Top 40 pop hits (think Rihanna and Lady GaGa) to artsy alternative ballads. Even the actors got in on the music action; Leighton Meester and Taylor Momsen both had their music featured on the show.
3. The special guests. From Hillary Duff and Michelle Trachtenberg having their own characters to celebrities who run New York fashion (Rachel Zoe), the New York social scene (Ivanka Trump), and who ran New York in general (Mayor Bloomberg), everyone loved and wanted a piece of Gossip Girl.
4. The quotes. Gossip Girl was filled with so many one liners that ranged from being so deep they made you think, to being so witty that it made you wish a situation would come up so you could use it.
5. Social media. Gossip Girl, though a different form of social media, was a way to show how much it runs people's lives. We spend so much time plugged in that we lose focus on what's in front of us. We care so much about people's opinions that we forget our true selves, which can be destructive.
6. Serena and Blair's friendship. Though it could be turbulent and they spent a good chunk of screen time fighting, they always had each other's backs. No matter what happened, they loved each other, and that's something we all crave in a friendship.
7. Blair and Chuck's love story. Again turbulent and borderline masochistic at times (I wouldn't recommend staying with anyone who sold you for a hotel in real life), they truly loved each other. They had a love that couldn't be killed no matter how hard either of them tried. And that's all anyone wants, that forever love that will never end.
Xoxo,
