I've lived in Florida my whole life. Through that time, I have seen many storms and hurricanes come and go.
The majority of them are hyped up by the news and only to turn out to be bad thunderstorms, so typically when I hear about a new hurricane I tend to continue on with my daily life and maybe swing by the store for a case of water if I get the chance. However, with Irma, I have seen Floridians panic like never before, so here are the reactions I've had to Hurricane Irma so far.
1. Wait, what's going on?
I was in Georgia camping for part of the weekend, and when I finally received signal again, I had messages from my dad telling me to stock up because of a hurricane. I felt like I had missed a lot while I was out camping since I had no clue what hurricane he was even talking about.
2. Oh great, another storm for the news to hype up.
After all the hype over the years and the minimal damage to Florida, it gets annoying to have the news tell you to panic for no reason.
3. Maybe I should grab some water.
I went shopping Monday and thought about grabbing water, but I was already in line checking out, and I figured I could come back later and grab a case. It was a week before landfall, so I didn't see the need to grab water so early.
4. I really should have grabbed water.
By Tuesday I was seeing posts from all over Florida talking about how all the water had been sold out at local grocery stores. My sister is farther north in Tallahassee, and she could not find water at her Walmart.
5. Maybe I should actually be worried.
After looking at multiple predictions and reading different articles, I realized there is a decent chance of Gainesville getting hit almost directly by the hurricane, or at least getting parts of the outside.
6. I found water!!!
After I realized this hurricane is the largest ever recorded in the Atlantic Coast, I figured I should try to grab some supplies. Luckily, Publix had just got in a new shipment of waters.
7. Ready for whatever happens.
We're still not sure how the hurricane will effect Florida, but regardless of what happens, I am prepared and have a place I can go if things get too bad.
