7 Quick Tips For Travelling On A Budget

Travelling is always fun, but it can be costly. This past week, I have become the travel expert! My friend Maddy and I went from Uruguay to a small, isolated town in Ecuador. We took 3 different flights and a bus to get there and 3 more to get back. Here are some things I picked up for the best, and cheapest, travelling experience.

1. Try not to check a bag- Most airlines allow for a carry on item and a personal item, so checking a bag isn't always necessary. I brought on a small duffle bag, a large backpack, my purse, and a blanket. It saves money and is safe for your stuff.

2. Stay in hostels- Hostels are ideal for backpackers and travellers because they are very cheap, easy to book, and a great way to meet people. I've stayed in about 5 different hostels over a 2 month period. Sometimes, I was in a room with many people, but others times, we had a private room where we were able to lock our door to keep our luggage safe.

3. Stuff clothes in your shoes- This is a real space saver! Stuff underwear, socks, or small shirts inside your shoes to create extra space

4. Write down your flight numbers- And I don't just mean on your phone. Write them down old style. If your phone is dead and you're in a rush, it's always good to have a hard copy of your flight numbers and reservation codes

5. Get to the airport early- I don't care if you have to wait 2 hours before your plane boards, getting to the airport early is always a good idea. Missing a flight means having to pay for another- and chances are it will be more expensive. You never know what kind of traffic or situation can stall you

6. Weigh your checked bag before you leave- If you have to check a bag, make sure to weigh it before leaving so you don't have to pay extra if it is overweight. An easy formula for weighing your bag is weighing yourself holding the bag, and then just yourself. Then subtract. Quick and simple.

7. Cheaper flights mean less sleep- A lot of the time, the cheapest flights leave at 3-5 in the morning. However, security is a breeze to get through and sleeping on the plane is always and option.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
