It was revealed this past week that Jordan Peele’s 2017 film "Get Out," which centers around a black man slowly discovering the dark practices of his white girlfriend’s family, has been classified by the Golden Globes as a comedy. This sparked a lot of controversy among fans of the film, arguing that the category trivializes the struggle of POC. However, I think that's simply preposterous. Every scene of "Get Out" had me rolling on the floor with laughter. Here are just a few of those gut-busting moments:
1. When the police ask Chris for his ID
2. Missy forcing Chris to talk about his mother’s death
She made him relive his childhood trauma, just to psychologically manipulate him. That's some A-grade comedy, if I do say so myself.
3. The Sunken Place
I can't think of anything funnier than the idea of a black man being unable to fight back, while his attackers do whatever they want to him. Can you?
4. The Auction
People were actually bidding on another human being, so that he could fulfill their own sick desires! It's like a slave trade! #LOL
5. Rose looking for her next victim
You can't help but laugh at Rose’s overconfidence that she can successfully seduce these men and get away with destroying their lives.
6. Walter committing suicide
Imagine how hilarious it'd be to commit suicide, because it's the only way to kill your oppressor. Comedic gold at its finest!
7. When Rose Tries to Get Help From the Police
A classic comedic trope is when a white woman tries to wrongfully accuse a black man of a crime. It gets me every time!
As you can see, Get Out is the epitome of a great comedy movie! How it's just being recognized as such is beyond me. Hopefully, it’ll win the Golden Globe’s “Best Comedy” award. I'm sure that we’ll never see “comedy” like this again.
