7 Important Lesson You Learn From Going Media-Free For 7 Days

The past week I went through a 7 day media fast. Now this does not seem like a challenge to some but let me break it down a smidge. By "media fast" I do of course mean social media, so no snapping/tweeting/facebooking/instagramming, but also this included no T.V./Netflix/movies/music. So basically anything you do when you're bored was a big "no no".

BUT it did teach me some things so here they are -

1. How much others use media

This amount is actually crazy. If you ever want to just get a small glimpse of this, put your phone down during any meal with friends or in any public place and just count how many people are on their phone or do not even hear you when you speak to them.

2. How much you would be using it if you could

By no means am I saying that this fast was an easy thing for me considering I like to lounge and watch Netflix as much as the next person. Though once you are not supposed to do something you realize how much you would actually be doing it. Like honestly think how you watch T.V. after work or while you are eating dinner and then take away the T.V. part. Weird.

3. How to slow down a summer

Everyone always seems to be contemplating just how does one make summer stop from moving so quickly and I may have found the answer. If everyone got rid of their media for the summer, time would feel endless. Which makes sense considering how much time we waste on our phones or binge watching Grey's Anatomy.

4. Social media really ain't that social

Go back to lesson one and remember how I said put your phone down at a dinner with pals, also do that during a hang out or basically at any time and you will see that there is a good chunk of time where everyone is focused on their incoming snaps or Instagram stories.

5. How much time we could have on our hands

The answer is SO MUCH. I felt like I could have read all of the Harry Potter books and had time to train for a marathon.

6. We all really HATE having any type of silence

This one especially came into play with the no music part of the fast. Imagine driving an hour in the car - musicless. It hurts the soul. I mean I hated the silence so much I just started talking to myself if we are being honest. Why? Hard to say.

7. We do not worry about documenting our every move(or caring about anyone else's moves) without it.

Suddenly without media, we stop caring about taking a picture of an aesthetic meal or wondering what everyone else is doing. Instead we just can do what we want, when we want without having to be on the lookout for your next Instagram post.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
