6 Ways To Beat Summertime Sadness This Year
Ian Dooley

After another long school year, it is finally time to break out the sunglasses and swimsuits. Homework has momentarily ceased and life can resume without academic distractions. Sometimes it is hard to know what to do with all this free time that we're not used to having. Everyone loves a great Netflix binge every now and then, but it eventually does get old. Here are some things to look into to make the most of this season of freedom.

1. Hammocks

Get yourself a hammock, hang it up between two trees, and look up at the sky. This is a great way to spend a nice sunny day. Just you and your hammock swaying in the breeze. Bring a good book as well. A lot of quality reading can be done while lying in a hammock. A perfect way to enjoy nature and unwind after a long day of work.

2. Roadtrips and Adventures

Nothing says summer like a car full of luggage and laughter. Summer is the perfect time to to go visit that tourist attraction you've had your eye on. Go visit that friend you haven't seen in forever. Spend the day at the lake or get some hand dipped ice cream. Check out that new restaurant or coffee shop. It doesn't have to be something elaborate and expensive. You could simply just discover hidden treasures in your hometown. Whatever you do, just make lasting memories and laugh lots of laughs.

3. Hiking

There are many wonderful hiking trails that lead to absolutely gorgeous destinations that are worth checking out. Not only is it great exercise, but it can be a fun activity shared with family, friends, or a significant other. Also, you can work on your tan.

4. Swimming

There is nothing like jumping into a pool of cool water on a 90 degree day. It is very refreshing and can also be a great form of exercise. Something I enjoy is floating on my back. It's very relaxing and soothing. Even if you aren't a strong swimmer, you can't really go wrong with a day at the pool.

5. Hobbies

What better way to kill some time than to pick up some old hobbies? School and work can be very time-consuming and sometimes enjoyable activities take the back burner for a time. This could also be prime time to learn something new. Maybe you've always wanted to learn to play an instrument or to sew. Maybe you haven't touched your paint brushes since before midterms. It's time to brush off the dust and enjoy some activities that are mind-numbing and don't make you think as much. Trust me, it's healthy to not think sometimes.

6. Friendships

Take some time to invest into friendships. It is so hard to maintain some friendships with people when everyone has completely different and crazy schedules. Some schedules still might look like that even in the summer. However, summer is a great time to catch up with friends and even makes new ones. In fact, grab a friend and tackle this list together. Friends do make things more fun after all.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
