6 Things That You Miss About Elementary School

Oh, how great would it feel to be a kid again.

As a college student, I can't help thinking about how much I miss elementary school and how much I took it for granted, considering how much work I'm buried in now. I am almost sure that many other college students will be able remember their fondest memories from their stress-free days. Here are just 5 out of many:

1. Classroom Holiday Parties.

Whether it be a Halloween, winter holiday, or Valentine's day party, there was nothing better than waking up all excited and stashing your Halloween costume for the school's parade/holiday treats you volunteered to bring for the class/Valentine's in your backpack. You stared at the classroom clock impatiently waiting for the first half of the school day to end so you could get your party on and dive into an afternoon consisting of games, movies, and sugar comas. Classroom parties were the perfect way to let loose at only 8 years old.

2. Bonding over Tamagotchis.

Tamagotchi's were huge when I was in elementary school. Almost everyone I knew brought theirs to school every day so we could compare our "babies" and bond over them. We "ooh-ed" and "ahh-ed" over all the different skin designs. You were caught up in a whirlwind of excitement only to get distracted and have the teacher take them away and stash them all in her desk drawer. You looked forward to the end of the day when your precious baby was returned to you and you could spend the rest of the day staring happily at the pixellated screen.

3. Field Trips.

You happily handed your teacher the signed permission slip, officially declaring you to take a day off of learning, whether it was going to a forest preserve, a museum, zoo, aquarium, etc. The only work you had to worry about was staying with your assigned buddy so you wouldn't get lost. Now as you sit in your college math class where you learn five chapters worth of work a day, you daydream about the times when you could actually escape school for a day.

4. The Whole Class Celebrating Your Birthday.

You felt like a celebrity for the day when it was your birthday. Your mom even came into the class to bring special treats for everyone to eat, and your name was written in large letters on the board announcing your special day. You were even given a special paper crown. You were the star of the show as every single kid in the room plus the teacher sang happy birthday to you. You felt like gold.

5. After School Snacks and Cartoons.

Now that you think back on it, elementary school was a piece of cake compared to college. The only homework you had was a math worksheet of 20 multiplication problems. Your after school life was heaven, you would come home, pour yourself a bowl of Goldfish crackers, and plop on the couch and watch classic cartoons such as Kim Possible, The Proud Family, or Spongebob. After all, you deserved it after a "hard" day of spelling tests and science labs.

6. The Last Day of School and Free Summers.

The last day of school was bittersweet. Every kid got caught up in the excitement of being able to wear shorts and T-shirts and going to summer camp with their best friends, but shed tears on the bus ride home. Summers consisted of freedom and the ability to do whatever you wanted, all day, every day, whether it be chasing after the ice cream truck or having sleepovers with your next-door neighbor under the stars. Now, you're the one working 10 hours a day dealing with kids who's ages are the age you want to be again.

So long, elementary school. You have no idea how much college students miss you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
