6 Things I've Learned Since I Moved To College

Your grades are important but don't forget to have a life too.

College is exciting, it's supposed to be. However, the first week of Freshman year is crucial to your survival (LOL). So here's what I've learned so far...

1. You don't have to like your roommate.

Luckily I was one of the lucky ones and my roommate and I are basically the same person. But, if you aren't as fortunate thats fine. You don't have to like them, the only thing you have to do is sleep in the same room as them, that's it.

2. Don't be shy.

I am not a shy person at all but being away from home, away from all of my friends is a little intimidating and if I wouldn't have put myself out there I wouldn't have any friends. It's easy to be shy and keep to yourself but it's harder to but yourself out there and meet people. Just do it, be bold and venture out of your comfort zone, you never know what kind of people you will meet.

3. Join organizations!!

This goes along with number 2. This is the easiest way to meet new people and it's been proven that students that are involved are more likely to make good grades.

4. Don't forget about your family.

In my case I moved two hours away, so the people that are used to seeing me everyday don't anymore and that's hard. So for the love of their sanity call them, Skype, FaceTime, send letters. Whatever you want to do, just don't forget that they would like to hear your voice.

5. College is nothing like high school.

They don't care what you do here. Yes there are rules but it's very minimum. You can wear what you want, say what you want, do what you want and no body cares. It's your life, you're grown now, you make the decisions on everything in your life now.

6. Don't be scared to live.

This isn't something I've learned yet but it still counts. Everyone tells you to not lose focus on your grades but please don't get so caught up in being the straight A student that you forget to have a life. Go join an organization, form a new one, whatever. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you do something.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
