I never thought the day would come, but here it is--the time to start thinking about what I'm gonna do for my thesis paper. This is probably the most dreaded part of an English major's college career, what with the insane amount of pages it has to be, the research required, and the pure stress everyone says it causes. The number one thing causing me stress in my thesis class at the moment, simple as it may seem, is picking a topic. So far, this is what it's been like:
1. The mid-summer "time to start thinking about your thesis topic" from your professor
And promptly delete, because it’s only July 30th for Christ's sake.
2. The first day of class, when everyone seems to know know their topics already
Wait, really? You guys actually thought about this over the summer? #awkward
3. The frantic, blurted-out-in-class answer
“And what are you thinking of researching?” *frantically racks brain for anything useful from the last 4 years of lit classes*
4. Actually trying to decide what you're going to write
This will probably involve a lot of hours spent on Google and asking your friends what they’re doing, hoping for some sort of Eureka moment.
5. Remembering how many of your assignments you actually read on Sparknotes
Not so helpful when you have to write a thirty page paper rather than pass a five question reading quiz.
6. Continue to hope that the thesis topic fairy pays you a visit sometime soon
Like, tonight, maybe?! It wouldn't be so hard to pick a topic if it was just for a normal paper, but knowing you're going to be spending an entire semester on it is daunting.I wish I had more steps to give you, but unfortunately, I’m still stuck on 6.
