In the world we live in today a healthy, lasting relationship is becoming more rare by the day. We're constantly experiencing break ups and divorce, amidst the already busy lives we live. It seems as though we've lost a pivotal strength in our relationships that the generations before us had. Some believe it's the changes in society, other's the advancements in media and technology. Maybe we have higher relationship standards than they did? However, I think we've simply lost the foundations that make a relationship. We may possess some of the qualities that support a lasting relationship, but without wanting to take all of the steps in maintaining a relationship, it will ultimately fail or become unhappy. Here are the six key steps to having a lasting, loving relationship.

1. Truth

Honesty is one of the most important pieces in any relationship. A relationship should never be formed from lies and will never last without complete honesty. Sometimes the truth can hurt, but I promise losing the one you love will hurt much more.

2. Trust

With truth, comes trust. A healthy relationship cannot exist unless you trust and have faith in your significant other. If you do not believe in your partner's love, the love will not last.

3. Affection

Tell your girlfriend that you love her. Tell your man all of the things he does that you adore. Always keep love present in a relationship. A simple hug and kiss can mean so much. It is also important to show your partner that you appreciate their love and affection, and reciprocate it.

4. Sacrifice

It is no longer about you. It is about us. You and your partner are a team and sometimes you must make sacrifices for the sake of their happiness. Go shopping with her. Watch his favorite movie. Make plans together. Relationships need compromise.

5. Understanding

Everyone has their good days and they also have their bad. In a relationship you must recognize this, and show that you love them no matter which of these days they're having. Although you may not fully grasp the way your partner feels, it is important to at least always try to understand them. Listen and work through the hard times together.

6. Support

You are there to make each other stronger and grow together. It is so important to support your partner and never let them feel as though they are alone in something. Encourage them through any endeavors they make in life and be there to hold them when it's been a long day.
