There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood recently, primarily because of the “selling fetus parts” video, which, despite turning out to be heavily edited by an anti-choice group, had the Republican party threatening to shut down the government if the bill to defund Planned Parenthood is vetoed by President Obama. With all of this going on, it’s easy to forget, or simply not acknowledge, how badly Planned Parenthood is needed by women, men, and teenagers across the country. With that in mind, here are 6 reasons to stand with Planned Parenthood.
1. Millions of people use Planned Parenthood each year.
Planned Parenthood provides sexual and reproductive health care, information, education, and outreach to more than 5 million women, men and teenagers every year. For teenagers who cannot get sexual education anywhere else, Planned Parenthood is a safe space full of information for them.
2. A significant amount of women will lose their primary reproductive health care provider.
Republicans have argued that if Planned Parenthood is defunded, women can receive healthcare from other medical clinics that do not provide abortions. But in reality, low income and rural patients will most likely be unable to find another clinic if they don’t have Planned Parenthood.
3. They provide safe abortions for women who need them.
Abortion— which is the reason Planned Parenthood is constantly under attack by conservatives— is legal, in case anyone forgot. And according to Planned Parenthood’s annual report, abortions only make up 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services, and it technically isn’t funded with the federal government’s money. Title X blocks federal funds from going to abortions; but in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the mother’s life, Medicaid can be used.
4. Planned Parenthood provides sexual health exams.
Breast exams, cancer screenings, and STI testing are important for women’s (and men’s!) health. Last year, Planned Parenthood health centers provided over 800 thousand breast exams and pap tests, and over 4 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections.
5. Planned Parenthood provides both low-cost and free birth control.
More access to birth control means less unwanted pregnancies, fewer abortions, and safer sex. According to a report done in August 2015 by Planned Parenthood, the estimated number of unintentional pregnancies avoided due to birth control supplied by the organization was 516,000.
6. Planned Parenthood provides a safe space for the transgender community.
They recognize and accept that people of all genders need healthcare; they also provide accurate information on their website about gender identity, as well as how to fight transphobia. In addition, Planned Parenthood clinics are also beginning to provide hormones for those wishing to transition.
When it comes down to it, most Americans don’t want to defund Planned Parenthood. If nothing else, shutting down the government over the funding of Planned Parenthood would be an extremely unwise financial decision. The last government shutdown, which lasted less than a month, took 24 billion dollars out of the United States economy. Funding for Planned Parenthood is 500 million dollars a year, a fraction of that cost. Is it really worth it? Maybe if Planned Parenthood changed their name to “Extremely Important Healthcare For Your Mother/Sister/Daughter,” then the Republican party would get behind it... but I’m not so sure.
