6 Reasons Why High School Homecomings Are Better Than College Homecomings

If I could go back in time to my high school homecoming, I wouldn't hesitate.

6 Reasons Why High School Homecomings Are Better Than College Homecomings

When most people think of homecoming they probably think of streamers, royalty, football, etc. When I think of homecoming, I think of a rotten night filled with booze and underage college students who can't touch their finger to their nose.

Through all of the chaos of what was my first college homecoming, I got to thinking. High school homecomings are so much better than college homecomings. Sure, you can disagree with me but in reality, there are multiple reasons why I prefer a good ol' traditional high school homecoming. Here are a few reasons why...

1. Everybody knows everybody

When you're in college, you don't really know anybody sitting in the stands next to you. Sure, you might recognize a few people from class, but it's not the same as high school. When you go to a football game at your high school, you say hi to everyone! And you actually know all of the football players or you've at least heard their name before and can picture their face.

2. You aren't afraid to go all out

Dressing up in a tutu and crazy leggings is definitely a must at your homecoming football game. But at my college football game, when I wore my gold leggings and gold bow in my hair, I felt like I was being judged by a number of people because they simply didn't care as much as I did. In high school, it's basically frowned upon if you don't dress up crazy for the games throughout the week.

3. There are a lot of activities throughout the week

The week starts off with crazy hair day as the first dress up day, followed by a home cross country meet. Then on Tuesday you've got super hero day, followed by a home volleyball game. Don't forget the innocent tailgating, the pep fests, coronation, yadda yadda. There's so much for you to do and you actually have an idea of when and where those activities will occur. Yes, I got a schedule of homecoming here on campus, but let's get real. The hypnotist was fun, but the rest of the week was just ice cream socials and all of that not so fun stuff.

4. No one is drunk

This is honestly what ruined my first college homecoming for me. I had no time to just have fun because I was constantly on the run making sure that my friends that were drinking were okay. Instead of tailgating, I stayed in my room because I knew I would have to become mama Megan, and I honestly didn't have the energy for that. In high school, there aren't any drunk people wandering around, therefore you can actually sit and enjoy the homecoming football game. You also don't have to worry about avoiding vomit or people spilling their drinks on your ridiculously awesome outfit that took you a month to plan.

5. You actually know who's on the homecoming court

Of course you freshmen out there might not know everyone yet, but being able to read the list of all of the candidates and actually knowing who they are is a good feeling. I've never even heard of whoever my college's king is, and I didn't know who I was even voting for. It was basically just picking which name that I liked best. It's so much better in high school because you know everyone and that kind of connection is something I really miss.

6. You have a sense of home

These are the people you grew up with. You've known their names since second grade and have sat by them every day at the lunch table. When you look around during the junior and senior chants in the hallways, you'll see that everyone is screaming right back with you. These are the people that know you and appreciate you and will always be crazy Tigers or Chargers or whatever your school is. You don't get that sense of home from your college homecoming football game.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
