Before each semester, we all have a hope. We plan to change our habits for the better and though we tell ourselves the same things and believe them every summer, they never really seem to pan out. Here are some of the lies we wholeheartedly believe before the semester starts.
1. "I'm flipping through my new textbooks"
Like everyone, we get this rush when we buy school supplies. You hope in your heart that this class will be interesting and cannot wait to flip through the pages of this newly ordered book. The truth is, however, that the day the book arrives on your doorstep, you tear it out of the package and realize just how big it is. Instantly annoyed that you will have to carry this monster book around, you simply place it with your other school books and forget about it.
2. "I'm going to dress cute everyday"
It can be fun to dress cute for school, but doing it everyday is a different story. You might go shopping for school clothes and make a vow that everyday you will have a pulled together outfit, but that isn't always possible. There will be days that you roll out of bed too late, grab a green t-shirt and orange athletic shorts and run to your only class of the day. It happens. There's nothing wrong with that!
3. "I can't wait to start classes!"
Many students get bored toward the end of summer and you might find yourself looking forward to something new. The sentence "I can't wait to start classes" isn't what you really mean. Two weeks into the semester, you might already already be drowning in your workload. The appropriate statement is, "I can't wait to get back to school" so you can see your friends and get back to your shenanigans.
4. "I'm joining more clubs"
Every school has a lot fun clubs that we would like to join, but will we? Probably not. Classes can be so intense that you are perfectly fine with just attending lectures and labs, studying, going to your one club, and sleeping. Though you long to be a part of the club that always brings puppies on campus, or the club that chills in hammocks all day and make crafts, you just cannot find the time.
5. "I'm going to be cooking a lot"
The best way to keep a balanced diet is to cook and prepare your own meals. But, as keeping with the theme of this article, you might not have the time or energy. Many people our age haven't the slightest idea how to cook, and do not have any of the materials needed. Why would you go out and buy pots, pans and ingredients when you could just get something on campus?
6. "I'm going to save money"
There are a million reasons why you should not have to spend a lot of money while at school. You might have on- campus housing, a meal plan, and other expanses already paid. So why is it so hard to save money? After having campus food for a while, you will want to eat out somewhere. After getting a low grade on an exam, you and your best friend might be in need of some retail therapy. Long weekend or vacation week coming up? What adventure are you going on this time? Saving money from your summer job is much easier said than done.
