6 Lessons 2017 Taught Me That I Wish I Learned Sooner

With each year we all gain a little knowledge, and we ultimately become stronger and wiser because of it.

Not that I know what I’m doing any more than any of you who’ve decided to click on this article (you clicked on it for a reason...am I right?), but I’m sure 2017 has been a momentous year for many of us, whether we are willing to admit it or not. However, what I’ve learned over the course of this year-and will for sure be bringing with me into the next- are lessons that I wish I had learned sooner, but are nevertheless worth knowing for what’s to come.

1. Do not complain about things you cannot change.

If there’s no way to control a problem, it’s probably best to just let the situation unravel as it is. Having said that, there’s no need to waste time even thinking about negative possibilities and “what-if’s.” Here’s an idea: try creating positives instead.

2. Time heals pain, both physical and emotional.

As we distance ourselves from our issues and those who have wronged us in the past, we can potentially understand why certain things may have happened the way they did. No matter how much something hurts at one time or another, give it time and it will subside.

3. Self love is more important than we may realize.

It may sound a little corny (or very corny), but this one took me the longest of all. As I’ve grown up, people’s opinions have begun to matter less and less, and I’ve learned that building yourself up is far more beneficial than tearing yourself down. In a world where you must do everything for yourself, you should be your first priority, always.

4. Stop trying to please everyone.

For people-pleasers especially, it’s a harsh reality to face that there is oftentimes no way to satisfy everyone and still feel even remotely happy in the end. Instead, focusing and prioritizing your energy on pleasing yourself first (before worrying about anyone else) is a much better use of your time.

5. Whatever you do, do with all your heart.

Scraping by and doing the bare minimum is an unfulfilling life to lead, especially at this time in life when you must be your own biggest fan. If you’re going to do something, do it well.

6. Always be kind.

Does this really need an explanation? Kindness is so underrated in the world we live in today and is unfortunately losing its value. Do not let the harshness of the world steal your compassion, hold on to it and convey it onto others.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
