Ah, the back to school season. New pencils, folders, and backpacks. Maybe even some new school clothes. But remember ladies, don't dress for the weather and make sure you're covered from head to toe. You'll distract the boys around you from learning if you show your shoulders.
Here are a list of issues that are way more important in schools than enforcing dress codes:
1. Seniors, who are 18 years old, seducing 14-year-old freshman.
It's disgusting and illegal, and yes it happens all the time.
2. Drugs.
Drug overdoses kill more people every year than falling, guns, and traffic accidents. If you think your students aren't abusing drugs, their blood is on your hands.
3. School Shootings.
Since 2013, there have been over 200 school shootings. That's an average of 1 a week. While you're trying to tell girls what not to wear, why don't you focus on teaching ALL of your students the importance of not turning to gun violence?
4. Self Harming.
24% of high school students harm themselves in some way: cutting, burning, and scratching are just three examples. Do you know how distracting it is to be in school and be worried about what will happen if your teacher finds cuts on your arms? Fearing a hospital visit is the least of these students problems, they're calling out for help.
5. Transitioning.
Someone who has just entered high school, or is getting ready to enter the real world is stressed beyond belief. What is it going to be like? Are they taking the right classes or making the right choices? Do they have the support they need?
6. Lack of Sleep.
Students are recommended to get 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Between school, schoolwork, sports, jobs, various extracurriculars, friends and family, students are lucky if they get 6 hours of sleep a night.
High school is one of the most challenging parts of a person's life. For many, it's the transition into adulthood. It's where one finds themselves. With all the stress of life that starts to come during this period of time, focusing on dress code regulations is completely ridiculous and unnecessary. Please school administrators, focus on the student themselves and not the clothes they're wearing.
