Horses: they're all different but have similiar personalities...
1. The Scaredy Cat
-- This is the horse that will freak out if a plastic bag moves 25 miles away. Don’t bring a plastic water bottle, a plastic bag, and don’t throw your hands in the air because the horse will freak out like they just saw a monster hiding in the closet. These horses tend to be scared of their own shadow. For example, a barn cat could run right past them, that they’ve seen a million times before, and they will take off like they’re being chased by a cheetah. They are always in flight or fight mode.
2. Accident Prone
-- This is the horse that will just be running around and step on a tiny pebble and all of a sudden become lame. You can find accident-prone horses at basically every barn you go to. You’ll see them bending in ways they shouldn’t be bending under fences, running so fast that they fall (they know better), kicking the boards out in their stalls, etc. They do things that hurt them, and most of the time they’ve been injured from doing the same thing one time or another, but they never learn.
3. Alpha Mare
-- The mare that thinks she is the boss of you, everyone else, and every horse in the barn. She thinks that whatever she wants goes. If she doesn’t want to go in, she will make it known. She wants her food to herself? Well, she’ll chase, bite, and kick every horse that comes near it. She doesn’t want to be worked? Well, she’ll do everything in her power so it isn’t a successful day. The alpha mare is basically a typical woman: one day they are up and the next day they are down.
4. The Escapee
-- You can catch this horse getting out of their halter, knocking down/jumping over fences, and even grabbing the latch of their stall just to make a point that they are smart enough to get out of anything. It can be very tricky to catch them in the act unless you set up a hidden camera, because most horses won’t do these rebellious things unless they are sure no one is watching.
5. The Stubborn One
-- This is the horse that doesn’t want to move for anything, not even a treat. You could hit these horses with a 2X4 and they still wouldn’t move. They think that if they disobey you long enough that you’ll finally give up. They don’t respond to your leg, your seat, or even a crop; occasionally they won’t even respond to spurs. It basically takes all of your energy just to get them to listen to you.
6. The Talkative One
-- This is the horse that will neigh whenever something new is happening. If you move the horse from its herd in the paddock it will neigh, when you get it inside it will neigh, when you finally get on your horse it will neigh again, and the others will neigh back. It’s their form of communication, but they never seem to know when it’s appropriate to shut up.
