UNCG ADPi

Coming to school at UNCG, I never would have thought I'd join a sorority. I had no problem with greek life, it was just something I never thought about. Since joining my sorority I've had so many new experiences, made so many new friends, and learned lots of new things that I couldn't imagine my life without. Usually though, when I tell someone I'm in a sorority there's a few common statements or questions. I decided to write this article to answer any questions you might have, maybe you'll learn something new.

1. You don't seem like you'd be in a sorority.

This is probably the number one thing I get when I tell someone I'm in a sorority. Yes, I understand that most peoples ideas of what a sorority is comes from movies. Usually in movies sorority girls are one or more of these things;

1. Mean
2. Dumb
3. Very sexually active
4. Avid partiers
5. Models

Of course there are girls like this in greek life, but there are also girls like this out of greek life. I am not personally any of those 5 things, but that doesn't mean I can't be in a sorority. Every single one of my sisters are different and unique in their own way, it's what makes being in a sorority so amazing.

2. So you only date frat boys?

No. I date whoever I want, most of the time they're in the music department because that's where I spend most of my time. To be honest, I only know like five frat guys. Of course there are always going to be exceptions to this statement, but all the girls I know just simply date whoever they like. It doesn't really matter if they're in a fraternity or not.

3. Can you tell me your secrets?

Once again, no. They're called secrets for a reason. A really special part of being in a greek organization is sharing these things with your sisters or brothers, it brings you closer together and creates a sense of unity. If you want to know, join a sorority/fraternity. Until then, I guess you're just going to have to keep wondering.

4. When's your next party?

Walking around campus wearing my letters I've actually had people stop to ask me this. I'm sorry to break this to you, but we don't throw parties.

5. I can't imagine having to pay for my friends.

This one really makes my blood boil, I don't pay for my friends. I pay to spend time with my friends. I pay to be get to go to fun events like sisterhoods, formal, and mallard ball.

6. What do you guys even do?

We do lots of things, my sorority works a lot with the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem (my favorite place to go with my sisters honestly). We also help the community as much as we can, study together, workout together, and just hangout. A lot of the same things you do with your friends.

7. Why do you like your sorority?

I like my sorority because it's home, these girls are my sisters, my family. They lift me up when I need it and ground me when I feel like I'm flying in a world of anxiety. They support me, love me, care for me, challenge me, and most of all make me the best me I can be. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for my wonderful sisters and all they do for me.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
