A 5th Year Student's Thoughts on Returning to School

It's that time once again, for maybe the eighth, ninth, or tenth time. No matter how many times you tell yourself it's not actually happening, it's still going to happen. No fabulous pair of ruby slippers can transport you to the comfort of lazy days on the couch with no worries. As you mentally brace yourself for another mundane syllabus day, these are some thoughts that might just cross your mind.

1. Wait, Christmas was literally yesterday…. Why are we going back to school already?

2. Can I just skip town and avoid all my responsibilities a little longer?

It’s a great opportunity to develop a new skill you never thought you’d have, like dealing poker or selling on the black market. Who says the parents have to know?

3. Classes start tomorrow….is this real life?

There’s no way. We haven’t even had enough winter weather yet.

4. Might as well bite the bullet and sign up for 8AM’s so I can get a good parking place.

One good thing about being in school for so long is learning that if you don’t show up early or have early classes, you’ll spend thirty minutes looking for a parking place.

5. Ugh….parking. I should really invest in a bike.

Life would be so much easier that way. And you’d be working on your figure for spring break.

6. My time management skills are going to be on-point this semester. No more all- nighters!

The question then is, how long will that last?

7. Is it acceptable to skip syllabus day?

It’s not like you haven’t heard everything you’re about to hear nine times before. What could you possibly miss? At least they've added the flashy new "Mental Well-Being Statement," that's exciting.

8. Score! I only really need one or two books, if that.

Why spend your life’s savings on six books you probably won’t even crack open? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

9. I’m old.

Those deals where you go around the class introducing yourself and you figure out you’re the oldest person in the room makes you feel just a little uncomfortable.

10. Who are all these people? I’ve never seen any of these faces wandering around campus before….

You may need to graduate when all the familiar faces you knew are gone.

11. Man, I really need to graduate.

Syllabus day class introductions are just another sore reminder that you’re eternally a student.

12. If only I’d gotten my act together sooner…..

Even though you know you can't help the face you couldn't figure out what you wanted to do with your life as an 18 year old, you still blame yourself for all the grief surrounding your extended college career.

13. Why do I already have a mountain of homework?

We haven't even gotten a full week under our belts and I already feel my anxiety coming on full force from all the assignments due now and those I know will be due as soon as I blink.

14. Spring Break can’t come soon enough.

It's only week two and you're already daydreaming about the long-awaited break and the marvelous vacation you'll take. In reality, you know you'll be dreaming of the same thing as you work the break away to earn some extra cash.

15. What is this stuff called motivation?

Does it even really exist? Or is that something you're born with or something you magically happen to find floating the ocean in a long lost bottle?

16. No seriously, where do you find this stuff?

17. Imagine what life is like when all you have to do is go to work....that sounds so simple.

Some say it is, some say it's not. But on second thought...

18. Am I really ready for the real world?

You get comfortable in your routine of going to class, doing homework, having a job, and the safety that brings. Leaving that and realizing you won't have to worry about it all seems weird. What do you do?

19. How many classes can I cram in so I can get out faster?

Forget about being scared; I'll do anything, just please get me out of here ASAP.

20. Can I just be done already? Please?

Graduation seriously can't get here soon enough.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
