"Pray for Las Vegas" That was the first thing I saw on my Instagram feed on October 2, 2017, at approximately 11:30 am. Five posts later and I still didn't know what it meant. I clicked on the hashtag to find out more information and that's when I saw it -- another mass shooting.
"Gunman opens fire at a concert in Las Vegas." I read this over and over again until I thought to myself; when does this end, why does this keep happening? But I realized, nobody knows exactly how and when it will end. They seem to think "banning guns" is going to solve the problem, it won't. Not only will people find a way around this, it still won't control the people that are doing this.
After every mass shooting you hear people go on about the terrible things that are happening to us and the number of people that are dying around us, but maybe that's the problem. If we keep saying this "has to end" and we don't do anything about it, will it ever actually end? I don't believe that the amount of people who own a gun really need it. Yes, there are people who own a gun for safety purposes, but we don't know the stability of everyone who goes out and decides to purchase one. Gun control, rather than the full removal of all guns is the best choice here. There should be better regulations when someone wants to purchase a gun because we clearly aren't doing a good job.
If it takes this many shootings and this many deaths for people to realize there is a problem, it needs to happen already instead of people just complaining about the "sick" people out there. It isn't always their fault, they aren't born with the idea to kill people. Instead of putting the blame on them, talk about the people who sold them the guns. Did they do the right amount of background checks? Did they find out the mental stability of that person? Did they keep track of the number of guns they owned?
Years ago I used to side with the right to bear arms. I thought if someone felt safe owning a gun for security purposes, maybe in their house for emergencies, that's their right. However, over the years my opinion changed. This isn't because I watched all these movies and television shows where the wrong people were killed. It's because I witnessed live videos of mass shootings every couple of months. It's because I read an article about the 20 and counting children who were shot to death while in the middle of learning addition and subtraction. It's because I was told I wasn't allowed to go to a concert because someone might bring a gun.
The other day I opened a link that led to a bunch of live videos of people scared for their lives during the Las Vegas shooting. I couldn't handle it. I broke down into tears. They didn't deserve this. Reading about their lives and the type of people they were made me so heartbroken for their families. So many innocent people killed for no reason, I really don't know what to say about it anymore. All I know is I'm completely miserable over the fact that I can't do anything about it.
I truly hope there will soon be a time where no one is killed just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
