"In a machine age, dressmaking is one of the last refuges of the human, the personal, the inimitable." -Christian Dior
Across all of my social media platforms, videos and pictures of the most daring and innovative designs from the most impressive designers have been popping up in my feed. New York Fashion Week has come and gone once more, and it has left something even more spectacular in its path.
Lady Gaga modeled for Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen showcased the beauty of diversity, and Ralph Lauren showed us that as life goes on, you can only get more fabulous. It was chilling, detailed and incredibly thoughtful. I fell in love with the sweet notes of Delpozo and the extravagant decadence of Rachel Zoe. I discovered the funky chic collection of Anna Sui and couldn't be more excited.
Fashion is something to be admired.
It's art that you display on your body and tells a story with the way you move in it. I appreciate fashion week, and I would hope you do too.
If the winter season blues have been hitting you hard, I hope you can find a little light in the pageantry of fashion week as I did myself.
This quarter has been incredibly stressful. With midterms and finals rolling up faster than expected, we all need something to show us that our lives do not begin and end in the terrifying grasps of never-ending studying and not-so-perfect essays. Look to the these masterful creations to assure you that innovation is possible. Do not feel bogged down in your studies or let anything else weigh you down; feel inspired to push forward toward something new and exciting that may not even exist yet.
You do not have to be incredibly interested in fashion and design to simply appreciate it. Appreciate the artistry and the time that has been put into every collection and take the foundation of that hard work and apply it to your own life. Everything starts from nothing, and nothing worth showing off comes easily. These designers did not simply snap their fingers one night and had their perfect and full collection ready the next morning. It took constant redrawing of baseline sketches, thread that continually broke and naysayers trying to discourage them from chasing their dreams.
To ace that final, you have to study.
To buy that car, you have to work.
To build that friendship, you have to learn to trust.
Everything worth keeping comes with time.
So what makes these collections so eye-catching? The story of struggle and perseverance behind them.
Go off, create, restart and create again. Keep going and push through the hard times, because every great goal achieved started off as a little and insignificant dream.
The mind-blowing pieces that stormed the runway during NYFW all started as a drawing on a piece of paper.
