50 Do's and Don't's Of Freshman Year

Freshman year is bittersweet. You get to start over and reinvent yourself in a new environment and explore so many new things. But...you're also back to the bottom of the food chain and have no idea how things at your new school operate. Trying to adjust can be extremely overwhelming at first, but it won't take long for you to get the hang of things. Hopefully, this list of 50 do's and don'ts can help make that process just a little less painful.

1. Don't wear your lanyard around your neck.

2. Do learn the vocab of your specific college.

3. Don't refer to your professors as "teachers."

4. Do put yourself out there and make friends with everyone.

5. Don't get discouraged if you don't meet your best friends in the first week.

6. Do study.

7. Don't procrastinate.

8. Do go into the year with an open mind about trying new things.

9. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

10. Do introduce yourself to your neighbors.

11. Don't get overstressed on move-in day.

12. Do take classes you're interested.

13. Don't take them at 8 am.

14. Do pack seasonally appropriate clothing.

15. Don't pack your entire closet.

16. Do have fun on weekends.

17. Don't leave all of your homework until Sunday night.

18. Do invest in college apparel.

19. Don't forget to do laundry.

20. Do rely on Google Calendar to keep your schedule all in one place.

21. Don't forget to check your email daily.

22. Do eat healthy things every once in a while.

23. Don't constantly worry about the "Freshman 15."

24. Do extra credit.

25. Don't skip class too often.

26. Do take the stairs.

27. Don't stay in your room all day.

28. Do call your parents to catch up now and again.

29. Don't feel the need to stay on campus every weekend; you can go home.

30. Do take good notes.

31. Don't skip readings or assignments.

32. Do loft your bed.

33. Don't forget to clean and vacuum often.

34. Do keep your door open sometimes.

35. Don't be loud or disrespectful neighbors.

36. Do get to know your professors.

37. Don't be afraid to speak up and participate in class.

38. Do make sure you flushed the toilet.

39. Don't flood the shower.

40. Do be respectful of the school's property.

41. Don't do incredibly stupid things on campus.

42. Do recycle.

43. Don't let your trash overflow.

44. Do bring more sources of light for your room.

45. Don't rely on the school's AC or heat...bring fans and blankets.

46. Do try to be civil with your roommate and distribute things equally.

47. Don't get upset if your roommate isn't your best friend.

48. Do join clubs and extracurriculars that make you happy.

49. Don't burn yourself out...start off small and build up.

50. Do enjoy your first year of college because it'll be over before you know it!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines.
