The 5 Weirdest Christmas Traditions

Putting a tree inside and lights outside makes sense, right?

Don't call me a scrooge, I am just a little bit skeptical of some of these Christmas traditions we all grew up with.

1. Mistletoe

Who is to say just because there is a plant hanging from the ceiling that you are supposed to kiss someone. Mistletoe can lead to some really awkward moments with people related to you or very staged first "moves" that no one thinks are smooth.

2. Santa

Ok, I know everyone loves Santa, but if you really think about it, there is a lot of bizarre things that go along with this man in a red suit. First of all, people force there children to sit on a stranger's lap in the middle of a mall to take pictures. Kids usually are scared and don't enjoy this and the photos never turn out as good as the parents wish. Secondly, the whole chimney thing is a mystery to me. Santa is supposed to be a rather fluffy man and I don't understand how he is supposed to fit down a chimney. Also, people leave cookies and milk next to the chimney for Santa to "eat", but I think that was just started as an excuse for parents to eat more Christmas cookies. Lastly, flying reindeer supposedly carry this heavy man with presents for kids all over the world through the sky? Now there is even a Santa tracker where you can track Santa . I just don't see how this is plausible.

3. Decorating a tree

I know trees decorated with lights, ornaments, and stars are beautiful, but who thought cutting down a tree to bring it inside to get decorated and die was a good idea? Don't even get me started on fake trees...

4. Eggnog

Do people actually like the taste of eggnog or do they just use it as a festive way to drink booze? This is a serious question people.

5. Decorating

During Christmas it has become expected to put lights all over your house and turn the inside of your home into a winter wonderland. First of all, no one has time for this. Secondly, decorating has turned into some sick competition. Which neighbor has more lights and more blow up decorations on their lawn? Whose house smells more like pine and freshly baked cookies? Who has more snowmen and Santas covering every surface of their family rooms? The decorating has gotten a little over the tops and I feel like every year people want to keep trying to make everything bigger and better.

I know these traditions seem so normal to us and they are a lot of fun to participate in, but isn't it just a little strange that one day has turned into a whole season filled with stress? Some people actually get excited that the holidays are over, but then they have to start the fuss all over again in 10 short months.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
