Most college students living away from home know the struggles of being in a new place, far from a familiar environment or from family. An empty apartment or dorm room may seem like a daunting task, but with the right materials and attitude, it can be your home away from home
Posters
There's nothing better used to decorate an empty wall than posters of your favorite movies, bands, or the things that you like. You can use almost anything to hang them up, including tape, sticky tac, command strips, etc. If you want to get creative, you can also get a blank canvas and have you and your friends paint on it to create a colorful menagerie to hang up.
Candles
If you find yourself moving into an empty apartment that has a dank, musty odor, lighting a few candles and leaving them around can leave a more pleasant smell that lasts a while, although air fresheners will also help with this.
Personal Items
Small trinkets that you have lying around, things you've made during your childhood that are close to your heart, or even just a few stuffed animals you have lying around can help make for a better and more comfortable environment.
Lights
A lot of people I knew living in their own place had LED string lights, almost like Christmas lights, hanging somewhere around the dorm for decoration. Something else to do would be to use strings and clothes pins to hang up old pictures of you and your friends.
Although your home away from home may be temporary, there are plenty of ways to combat homesickness and make it a great place to live.
