5 Ways To Stay Alive During Dead Week

How to navigate the stress of the week leading up to finals.

No matter how much we would all like to go on believing that it’s still the leisurely week after spring break, there is a grim reality ahead for us. Something is coming and it’s wicked, soul-sucking, and unavoidable. Finals week.

It’s just around the corner, which means that students are ramping up for the famous Dead Week, the week before finals where every teacher feels the need to squeeze in just one more test or just one more paper while they still can. And, thanks to all the snow days we have been having and all the canceled classes, things are even more packed than they were before.

1. Don't give up!

As tempting as it is to hang back and slack off during these last few weeks, it’s not worth it. You have been working too hard during the semester to throw it all away now just because of Passover/Easter hangover.

If you haven’t been applying yourself as much as you should have, this is your time to shine and bring that grade up to where it rightfully belongs. Regardless of what boat you’re in, finishing the semester strong, while a challenging task, is something you’ll thank yourself for in the future.

2. Take it one day at a time.

If you’re like me and you keep a calendar/schedule of events and assignments coming up, odds are you are stressed just looking at the work to come. My advice to you is something I tell myself every day but find to be particularly important right before and during Dead Week. Take it one day at a time!

The paper you have due in two weeks is still important and should be worked on little by little, but the test you have tomorrow deserves more of your attention. Don’t let the stress of future assignments mess up present ones.

3. Your best is the best you can do.

While I hope everything goes well during this time of chaos, it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t. You should stay up the extra hour to finish the presentation if you can, but if you can’t, then that’s the best you can do.

Sometimes, things are too hard or piling up too high, and you may have to make some compromises. Push yourself to your limit, but don’t push beyond it. An assignment isn’t worth your mental health. Forcing yourself into a negative or exhausted mindset in the beginning of Dead Week is going to negatively impact the rest of your semester.

4. Take some time for yourself.

This can be something as simple as taking a break to cook dinner or going out with a friend. Sometimes, even just studying with a peer is enough to distance yourself from negative thoughts. Recharge your battery for the next challenge.

Whatever it is that calms you - a long shower, a movie, a book - give yourself that reward every once in a while. Just make sure it doesn’t go on for too long and turn into procrastination.

5. Remember, you can do it!

The only one holding you back is yourself - cliché but true nonetheless. You have been preparing for these assignments and tests the entire semester, so now’s the time to show your professors what you’re made of.

As we wonder where March went and prepare for Dead Week, just imagine how nice May is going to be. Unless this crazy New Jersey weather keeps up, then think of June. I guess? Or maybe July.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
