With so much violence and hate seemingly sprouting up in our nation this week, I want to speak on the only weapon we have against it. Kindness is so often addressed in the Bible, so I wanted to list a few key verses.
Ephesians 4:32: Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Luke 6:35: But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.
Proverbs 3:3: Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart.
It is obvious that kindness, compassion and general consideration for others is something our Father values very highly. If we could only remember how good it feels to be loved, then we wouldn't ever feel the vengeful emotions that have been gripping this country. The easiest way to remember Christ-like behavior is to be treated with it. Let it start with you. Begin every day to show more and more love and respect to those around you. Here are some ideas on where to start:
1. When given the chance, always say hello.
2. Go the extra mile and ask someone how they are doing.
Even if they just reply with "good, how're you?" you have made the effort to show them you care. That someone cares.
3. Always let the other person go first.
When you walk up to a checkout line at the same time as someone else, when the other car at the four way stop sign stops at the exact same time as you, or even when you really have to pee and your sister does too but there is only one bathroom in the gas station you are making a pit stop at.
4. Remember to smile.
Not everyone likes to be hugged and not everyone wants to say more than an easy "hello" to you in passing, so be sure to make the best of what you've got and smile.
5. Be open.
Spread kindness like your life depends on it. Encourage others to allow their guards to come down, to let love in and baseless hate out. The more people encompass themselves in the fruits of the spirit, the better the world will be.
