Actress, humanitarian, inspiration. Audrey Hepburn has long been one of my role models. Not only is she known for her timeless, natural beauty, but she also modeled the art of being a woman. She encompassed joy, passion, class, beauty, intelligence and kindness from her work as an actress, her fashion sense, her involvement in the community and her daily life. Here are some ways we can all feel a bit more fulfilled in our lives by following Audrey’s shining example.
1. Recognize what true beauty is.
“The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.”
Although Audrey herself was gorgeous, she had a firm understanding that beauty is so much more than having a pretty face. True beauty is the way we carry ourselves, the way we serve others and the way we pour our heart into what we do.
2. Feel grateful for what we do have and see the goodness that surrounds us.
“If my world were to cave in tomorrow, I would look back on all the pleasures, excitements and worthwhilenesses I have been lucky enough to have had. Not the sadness, not my miscarriages or my father leaving home, but the joy of everything else. It will have been enough.”
It’s so easy to get caught up in thinking about what’s going not-so-perfectly in our lives, but Audrey had such a wonderful ability to find the good amongst the trials. The more we focus on the things that are going wrong, the less fulfilled we will feel. But, if we remind ourselves of the many things that are going well, we will feel so much happier.
3. A little bit of “me time” is good for the soul.
“I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and... I believe in miracles.”
Although beauty is not definitive of a woman’s value, spending some time pampering ourselves tends to make us feel just a little bit happier. Dressing with class and feeling confident about our appearances can make our days a little better. Being true to ourselves and allowing ourselves to keep looking forward to tomorrow, whatever it may hold, can allow us to take each day with a smile.
4. Treasure the present moment.
“Pick the day. Enjoy it - to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come... The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present - and I don't want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.”
Audrey just gets it: we can ruin today if we spend it worrying about tomorrow. We don’t know what will happen in the future and the past is already gone, so today is all we have to enjoy. We can choose to make today and each day the best day we’ve ever had. Worrying about tomorrow just steals the joy from today.
5. Chocolate fixes everything.
“Let’s face it, a nice creamy chocolate cake does a lot for a lot of people; it does for me.”
I’m convinced chocolate could bring about world peace, and Audrey would definitely agree.
