5 Ways To Be Kinder To Yourself In 2018

Something that has been on my heart and mind lately is that we are incredibly hard on ourselves. Often, we find it much easier to praise others, but difficult to give ourselves credit. Here are some ways to give yourself a break in 2018.

1. Do one thing for yourself each day.

This practice could be vastly different from person to person. For me, I like to take 30 minutes each morning to read my favorite blogs. For you, this could mean taking the time out of your day to go to the gym, practice yoga, call your best friend, watch Netflix, or take a nap. Whatever you need that day, make some time for you.

2. Recognize that it is okay to not be okay.

The reality of life (and especially college) is that there will be ups and downs. Maybe you are overwhelmed with work, maybe you had a fight with your boyfriend, or maybe you are just going through a difficult season. Life is meant to be messy. Let yourself feel your feelings: happy, sad, confused, worn out. Allow yourself to accept that because you are human, you will struggle and in turn, you will also thrive. Both are equally worthy.

3. Get your rest.

I know you’ve heard it a thousand times before, but it is SO important. Do not compromise your sleep for anything, not a paper or a test, not a late night study session for a final. Prioritize your work during the day so you can get a minimal 7-8 hours of sleep each night. And remember, naps do not equate a good night’s rest.

4. Cultivate a better body image.

In 2018, give yourself permission to lose the food rules, lose the idea that thinner is better, and lose the notion weight equates health. Eat the cupcake instead of the fruit and get the Frappuccino instead of the skinny latte. Throw out your scale. Do not link your self worth to your body size. And always remember that those who love you, who know you at your core, don’t care about how much you weigh or how thin your thighs are.

5. Remember that you are enough.

Messy, overwhelmed, crying, happy, excited, confused, hurting. No matter where you are today, you are enough just as you are.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
