5 ways to make friends on campus

My whole life, I have always been a very extroverted and sociable person and I've never struggled making friends. But putting this aside, there are always things you can do to help ANYONE make friends while surrounded by thousands of strangers. Campus may be big, but it doesn't have to be scary.

1. Join clubs

Colleges across the country offer so many unique and individualized clubs that there's a place for anyone and everyone. At Michigan State University, there are over 900 clubs to choose from, ranging from musical groups, to scholars programs, to environmental organizations. There should be no problem finding the club for you, and by finding your interests, you're more likely to meet people that you click with.

2. Rush a fraternity/sorority

It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, I would encourage everyone to rush! Even if you're unsure about joining a sorority/fraternity, I would say go for it! You're never forced to join an organization, and the worst that could happen is you meet new people! Rushing is a great way for incoming freshmen to meet new people and settle into their new life at school!

3. Join an intramural sports team

Whether you played it in high school or you thought it would be a fun activity with your friends, intramural sports are a great way for people to stay active and meet new people. Basically "killing two birds with one stone," IM sports teams help students balance their teams' schedules and their individual schedules as well. You're sure to meet new people and have a good time, no matter what game you're playing

4. Get a job

Not only does getting a job help you make money for books and other school necessities, working on or off campus gives you an opportunity to meet new people. They could be your co-workers or your customers, but any new person you meet has the capability of being a friend. Colleges everywhere offer jobs to students for them to meet and work with other people like them. There's no way you CAN'T make friends when working together!

5. Support your school

Making friends is not an effortless action. One way to meet new people and make friends would be participating in school-sanctioned events. At Michigan State, there's plenty of opportunities to meet new people through tailgates, football games, the Izzone Campout, basketball games and so many more events throughout the year.

Hopefully these tips can help someone find some new friends on their campus!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
